WRX based mid-engine roadster from Factory Five Racing
Factory Five Racing is developing a mid-engine, RWD roadster that will use a WRX donor for it's running gear. The car is expected to be about 1800 pounds and have a removable top. The kit price is targeted to be $9,900, plus a donor WRX. See the link for more info: FFR WRX Roadster
Factory Five Racing is the number one seller of Cobra kits, as well as a few other awesome kits.

http://www.factoryfive.com/whatsnew/...bie-racerA.jpg Looks to be something like the K1 Attack kit car... before K1 decided to only produce turn keys. Given that Factory Five makes nice kits, I'm looking forward to this. |

The original "Single Donor" Cobra was an ingenious idea that allowed Factory Five to grow into the company it is today.
I hope this works out just as well for them. I'll be very interested in seeing how the exterior design evolves. Depending on how much of the donor WRX is used, and if it's designed for a sedan or wagon, or both, it will theoretically be possible to use any Legacy through '99, any Impreza through '07, or even the Forester thru '08 as the donor car. |

Will that mean the FFR will be competing against the Smyth kit based off of the Jetta? The Jetta one looks like it could be built mild with high mpg, or with the VR6 engines if I read it right.
Similar ideas for body, engine layout, single donor, kit cost, etc... Hope both find a niche, would be sweet to see some lightweight fun cars out there. |

Sounds like a good project to me. My only suggestion... give the engine room enough space for an EG33 flat 6. With some pistons, cams, and turbos... THAT will be an interesting car. And frankly, to a certain extent... make the space-frame modular, and let people fit the mid-engine-proportioned body that they want. I have several ideas, coupes, and roadsters. DeLorean DMC12 updated to today. Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale Porsche 904 Carrera Faux-rrari 250LM, Dino, or any number of mid-engined bodies, or even the original Dino concept. Mercedes C111 concept Marcos Mantis XP Affordable knock-off of a Porsche Carrera GT, or 918 with boxer power. Sterling, or newer canopy designs like Maserati Birdcage 75th, or Saab AeroX Jag XJ13, CX75, XJ220, or XJ15 Or any manner of custom bodies one can imagine for a mid-engined layout. BTW, Does anybody know if the 2010 Legacy GT cable-shifted 6MT is capable of being converted to lateral-drive only, if parts from a FWD Subaru 5-speed are used? I want the original Lancia Stratos... even if it's in replica form. I look into the company that built the one that they had on Top Gear but it uses a lot of different parts from older Fiats, Lancias, and Alfas which would be a PITA to source in the US. There needs to be a cheaper, easier alternative than that

I second the motion for the H6.
6 cyl boxer is yummy. Oh and btw. Wow. I'm starting my savings account now. I've been seriously considering a used boxter S. With this coming in at half the weight, it would blow one away. Last edited by needcarinmass; 02-12-2011 at 10:58 PM. |

Considering how nice the kits are that FFR builds, this one will be awesome. I think there will be a lot of flexability for us Subaru guys. I see no reason that you couldn't use almost any turbo drivetrain, although the kit will probably be designed specifically to use the suspension and brake parts from an Impreza. They may also build it to use some of the interior pieces as well.
As for competing with the Smyth car, that car is specifically being build to be a green car. That car requires you to use the frame from the VW. The FFR will use a custom tube frame, like all their other kits. |

But I would very much hope they would step up the suspension. SLA suspension all the way around would be GREAT, especially if they can use off-the-shelf standard shocks and springs from a different car, such as a Miata or something. They could also use some of the suspension tech from their mid-engined GTM, if they wanted to. McPherson struts can work in a pinch with packaging concerns, but on a car like this, I doubt the packaging is going to be as constricted, in the front or rear... so not compromising the suspension on a sports car with an uncompromising mid-engined layout, would be preferable. |
