Had a great Saturday morning-
JC went out in the first session and put down a 1:23.141, which set a new mod class track record over the Cobb GTR. I have some in-car that I'll edit and upload tonight. Parked the car the rest of the day and went out Sunday morning to try for a high 1:22 when something went pop coming out of turn 1. Today we found this: So it was nice of the motor to hold up for most of 4 races: Superlap battle in November where we set the track record there for Mod Speedventures time attack in march where we tested the new front end aero Modified Mag shootout in April- results will be in the August issue and then this first Global Time Attack, where it lasted just long enough. So we're not really surprised with the boost we're giving this thing. It's really tempting to go sleeves, wills rings, and oversize studs... Last edited by AQ Motorsports; 05-23-2011 at 10:54 PM. |

So does this mean you guys have data now? sounds like you guys have the right idea with rings and sleeves to keep the foundation of the motor strong. Don't forget pinning the mains too. CONGRATS on the time!!! |

yeah... about that data,
when Shawn was downloading the logs from Saturday morning the process froze and we got nothing. Then the dash and on switch weren't working right either so the master got cycled and everything seemed well. It makes me wonder if some sort of a glitch in the ecu, tune, or wiring had something to do with the failure but on the otherhand it's really not unexpected. So sorry guys, data analysis is something I really wanted to spend more time doing this season and so far we haven't. Oh and also the crank broke and some rods are bent. We're getting WELL into 6th after an 8000rpm upshift. Should be somewhere north of 170 on the front straight. Last edited by AQ Motorsports; 05-24-2011 at 07:45 PM. |

I'm really not all that surprised. This was a motor we threw together in a two week rush before superlap, and the crank got re-used after this happened last november:
the crank was actually bent after that one and we had it straightened, magnafluxed, and put it back in. Other than the crack the shortblock that just came out is in good shape. We will probably have it sleeved now and get some oversize headstuds. What I think must have happened is the cracked cylinder let water in the chamber, and that bent the rods and broke the crank. yes. We cracked a stock 99.5mm sleeve awhile back on much less power and I'm still unconvinced that going to 100mm = instant broken case. Really it was just that we were making so much power and boost on a mostly stock block.
Let me add up the number of laps this thing did: ~10 laps at SLB set to 32psi ~8 lap test day at speedventures with 25psi 38 psi tune for the GTX35R two dyno pulls and two drag passes at modified shootout at 38psi 3 auto-x laps at modified shootout @30psi 5 hot laps at modified shootout @35psi 3 hot laps at GTA @35 psi so about 30 laps total and only about 20 at over 30psi. The previous motor, which was nearly identical, lasted a lot longer but never ran an event over 650whp. Last edited by AQ Motorsports; 05-25-2011 at 07:14 PM. |

Congrats on the new record! That's awesome and great driving!
Really sucks it let go on you though. I've heard that the bigger studs distort the block and guys up here are now using L19's instead, have you any thoughts to this? I plan on running 30+psi and wonder if my studs (Stock diameter ARP's) will be the week link on my sleeved block? Good luck with the new motor... |

Ideally I would like to go all out on a build, but I can't help but wonder if we would just be breaking more expensive engines. Here's some wrc eye candy in the meantime: and motoiq has some good pictures of the car in their write up of the GTA event: http://www.motoiq.com/magazine_artic...s-at-wsir.aspx although JC decided to list the car as the OMG racing STi... it also put us up to 9th overall fastest time attack car at WSIR: http://hellafunctional.com/?p=490 I think as is (was) the car is good for a high 1:22 and a set of C91s should put it well into the 1:20s. LIC put on some slicks for the NASA TT session and picked up over 2s, winning TTR with a 1:23.136 Last edited by AQ Motorsports; 05-25-2011 at 08:35 PM. |
