tittykaka7- Thank you so much for this thread. I have been tracing this problem for 9 months. I have taken it to several subaru dealerships/auto body/machanics and no fix. I was told it was the rear diff and $1400 to fix. I was to the point that I was going to trade my car in cause of the noise, I couldnt stand it any longer. I LOVE the car so I would of bought the same thing. Thank you some much again, I took the plate off beat it flat and will have my new plates from subaru by wed. With this issue def spending the $12 for both brackets and replacing them both. Yahoo what a relief. I'll take the $12 fix and scream with joy that my noise is gone. THANK YOU AGAIN.

Wow! Thats awesome man I'm really glad to hear you figured it out before trading in a perfectly good car!

When I first discovered this I thought, WOW lots of people must have this happen and just live with the noise, or try to track it down forever.. but man how aweful would it be to trade cars over it! Soo glad you found this thread in time!

Edit - How do I change the title to say "Solved"? I tried editing my first post.

^^^
Great info in this thread (I am trouble shooting similar problem). Thanks for posting the solution.

FYI, check TIC's "Klunk Killer" bushing kit. I am hopeful that this will be the solution to recent increase in diffy whine from back end of my high mileage 04.

My 06 has a mean whine around 65-75 mph, under or over its gone. I changed bushings, bearings, fluids and seals and no luck.

Does anyone know of it's possible this bracket might be the culprit? It's a 6 speed so something might be different.

Thanks.

Look under the car and take a look. The bracket is the same.

Wanted to post a follow up on this. The driver side one had a noticable bend upwards, that I'm sure was coming in contact with the body. You can't tell this, unless you take it off the car. Instead of trying to hammer it out... I just ordered two brand new brackets from the dealer. Since putting them on, the noise has been significantly lower... you can still hear it faintly, but it's not being directly transmitted onto the entire body like before.

Anyone want to get these new.. here they are (left driver side, right passenger)

So... Mine has been doing the same thing, but I have an 08. So would this be a similar issue? I have different Diff mounts so maybe in a different location?

Im not sure on the 08, do you use a jack or do you know if anyone was putting a jack on the spots where the rear diff mounts are? Try to snap a pic of your rear diff mounts and maybe we can figure it out.

Lol I'm in the same boat as you... Noticed it the other day at cruzin speed .. I thought it was a wheel bearing or bad tires but it's more of a humming noise so good possibility it's these brackets :-) maybe I'll be rewarding the OP $10 lol

This is an absurdly awesome thread. my whine behaves quite differently though...LOUD at low speeds while coasting and completely silent in 4th and 5th. I know for a fact that my outrigger mount plates have the piss bent out of them, but i never really considered the consequences. i will be pulling them tonight...

My car is making grinding/whining noise when I let off the throttle at any higher speed, but it turned out to be the $180 Exedy replacement clutch (very common issue). I also replaced plates, which were badly rusted.

I have the same whine. Thought it was a wheel bearing, but just had it up on a lift at a mechanics and they ran it up to 60mph with the wheels spinning and it is definitely coming from the rear diff.

Since I heard it up on the lift I don't think it is these plates. It is between 50-60mph during accel/decel and coasting not in gear. Any ideas?

Awesome, I'm hoping this will fix my noise that is similar to yours. I just swapped from an R160 to an R180 rear diff and I think I may have twisted those mounts causing the rubbing.

Thanks for finding the solution.

It is the rear diff. The plates help because the plates can transmit the sound into the car. So the plates might help reduce it. No way to get rid of it unless you rebuild the rear diff.

Here it is 2016 and this thread was spot on for my 9-2x tuning fork. Swapped out the winter wheels/tires to summer the other day and thought my diff was going to blow up. At about 50mph the entire car hummed so loud that people in their yards stopped and stared.

A caveat for those of you with older cars in rust-prone areas: The big bolt holding that clamp on got very rusty inside the frame and I snapped off the welded nut trying to remove the bracket. Once that happens, you got to cut a hole under the rear seat to gain access. This turns a small, easy project into a messy fix.
If you've got rust under there, do all you can to bend the bracket back into shape without trying to spin that bolt off.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this thread, or heard of this condition before. I'm in the middle of pulling off the center diff to check the bearings when I see someone point out this thread.
I'm almost certain I have this condition as I recently broke off all 4 of the smaller mounting bolts because the plates were bent when I went to inspect the outrigger bushings. (Drilled them out and replaced with m10x1.25 bolts).

Now I'll have to see if I can get the center diff extension back on and rework the plates.

Note the plates are either 41321FA040 or 41332SA040. They appear to have the same fitment, but have a slightly different shape?

I know you posted this 6 years ago and will likely never see this, but in the event it helps others in the future..
I had literally the exact same sequence of events as you leading up to my finding of this solution. On a lift 6 feet in the air, the whine from the rear diff was SO loud we were all convinced the diff had gone bad.
I replaced the rear diff and .. SAME ISSUE! These diffs make this much noise naturally! So rebuilding / replacing the diff will not help this issue. The plates making contact with the body of the car is just letting that normally muffled noise transmit into the car, turning your interior into a tuning fork!

I have a 98 Legacy 2.5 GT 5 speed manual with this same rear diff noise, only in my case, it occurs at any speed past about 20 mpg and only when coasting or decelerating.

I removed the bolts and plates on both side and inspected them. No metal to metal rubbing, so in my case, that does not appear to be the root cause. I know the sound is definitely from the rear diff as I had it up on a lift with a helper driving up to about 60 mph and then taking the foot off the gas. MAJOR loud noise from rear diff.

I changed the diff oil. It was dark as can be, but there were no metal shavings. Still making the same noise with the fresh oil. I'll probably just learn to live with it. My mother purchased the car new back in 1998 and it was always serviced at the dealer until he handed it to me 3 years ago. This noise only started about a month ago out of no where. Car pretty much looks brand new still as it was always garage kept and only saw about 5,000 miles per year.

It may be hard to spot where the metal is touching, might not be the same place as mine was.
The bushings could also be worn out for you. You could order new diff mounts for all mounting points as at that age it could be any of them transmitting the noise.
