Default Maserati SUV to be called ‘Levante’, new sedan to carry ‘Ghibli’ name

Quote:
At the 2012 Paris Motor Show, Maserati unveiled the new GranCabrio MC – but besides that, the luxury Italian brand also unveiled the name of its upcoming SUV and sports luxury sedan (the one that will compete with the likes of the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class
“The new high-end E segment four-door sedan will be named Ghibli – a name that draws directly from Maserati’s rich and successful tradition,” Maserati said in a statement.
Check out more news on the Maserati Kubang.
The SUV, as previewed by the Kubang Concept, will feature the Levante badge – “as in Via Emilia Levante in Bologna, where the Maserati brothers, almost a century ago, dreamt of the company that today still bears their name.”
Along with the next-generation Maserati Quattroporte, the three models are expected to help push sales beyond 50,000 units by 2015.

I'm here for the Kubang.

+1 to shikataganai on the Infiniti and Audi influences, not sure if Kia.

I guess it was just the general high-haunched 3/4 feeling of it, even if the lines on the Kia are straighter with less Bangle-oid flame surfacing:

Maybe Mazda CX-7 would be a more apt comparison, with that swoopy rear fender effect…

These are the first spy shots of Maserati’s upcoming SUV, the Levante, which will enter production in 2015 and hopefully arrive in showrooms in time for the 2016 model year. This is a very early test mule for the vehicle, which shares only internals with the production version of the Levante set to be unveiled sometime next year.

The test mule confirms Maserati is sticking with its own platform rather than relying on Jeep Grand Cherokee running gear, as previously planned. The platform is a modified version of the rear-wheel-drive underpinnings found in the Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans, complete with Maserati’s own Q4 all-wheel-drive system.

The test mule also confirms that the Levante will be similar in length to the midsize Ghibli but with a wider track, as evidenced by the makeshift wheel arches. The Levante will also be much taller than the Ghibli and sit much higher, which you would expect for an SUV—the thick roof of this test mule is additional weight, used to simulate a taller center of gravity.

As for styling, Maserati’s Kubang concept car from the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show points the way. Don’t expect the Levante to be a clone of the Kubang, however, as the design language of Maserati has evolved since then.

The Levante won’t be a capable off-roader like the Jeep Grand Cherokee or Land Rover Range Rover; instead, it will target luxury performance SUVs such as the Porsche Cayenne and the upcoming Bentley SUV. The most potent model should hit 60 mph from rest in a little over 5.0 seconds.

As for engines, expect the same turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and 3.8-liter V-8 gasoline units found in the Ghibli and Quattroporte to make their way into the Levante. The most powerful model should match the 523-horsepower rating of the most powerful Quattroporte. Overseas, expect a diesel too. An eight-speed automatic should be the only transmission.

Production of the Levante will take place at the Mirafiori plant located in Turin, Italy, which is owned by Maserati’s parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and has the capacity to build up to 300,000 vehicles per year. Volumes for the Levante will be much lower than that, with initial sales estimates ranging between 10,000 and 15,000 units per year.

And in case you were wondering, the Levante name comes from Via Emilia Levante in Bologna, Italy, where the Maserati brothers more than a hundred years ago dreamed of the company that today still bears their name.

I assume that's just a Ghibli body hacked together on a prototype chassis? Or is this going to be another X4/X6/Accord Crosstour-style platypus-aping monstrosity?

I dig the roof extension, though. I want that.

While these images have yet to be ratified as official, they do appear to be similar in shape and proportion to various test mules of the Levante which have been spotted over the past few weeks. These pictures were originally published on a Dutch news website, but have since been circulated online.

Part of the leaked package of information also reveals the Levante's engine range for the first time. The information reveals that at least two petrol and one diesel version of the Levante will be available at launch.

Both the Levante 350 and the Levante 430 will use the same 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine that already features in the Ghibli and Quattroporte. The Levante 350 is claimed to be capable of reaching 62mph in 6.3sec with a top speed of 151mph, while the Levante 430 can manage the same 0-62mph sprint in 5.2sec, with a top speed of 164mph.

The diesel engine is also a 3.0-litre V6, and can reach 62mph in 6.9sec before hitting its top speed of 143mph.

As well as these powertrains, the Levante is likely to borrow the Quattroporte's V8 engine in a range-topping performance version. A plug-in hybrid version of the Levante is also planned.

These images reveal the new Levante features a dramatically sculpured bonnet with a bold interpretation of Maserti's front grille. Large front air intakes can also be seen. Maserati's usual wheel arch air vents also feature, while at the back there's a boot-mounted spoiler and quadruple exhaust exits. There are also nods to 2011's Kubang concept car, which first signalled Maserati's intent to enter the SUV market.

Interestingly, these pictures also give us a close look at the new car's interior, which includes steering-wheel mounted paddles for the automatic transmission and a large central infotainment screen.

The launch of the Levante is seen as a crucial moment for Maserati, as the firm looks to capitalise on the profitable and growing luxury SUV market. The Levante will compete with the likes of the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q5. The Levante could quickly become Maserati's biggest seller, as the firm looks to grow sales to 70,000 units by 2018.

Speaking to Autocar, Maserati boss Harald Wester confirmed that the Levante would be priced to sit in between the £53,580 and the £81,660 Quattroporte. That means a price of around £65,000 is likely.

Fresh from its world debut at the recent Geneva Motor Show, the 2017 Maserati Levante is set to appear next week at the New York Auto Show and start rolling into showrooms all across the country as early as next month.

We can now reveal that the mid-size luxury SUV will have a starting price of $72,000, before destination. Maserati hasn’t said how much destination will be for the Levante but for the similarly priced Ghibli it’s $1,250.

The $72k figure is for the base Levante, which comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 good for 345 horsepower. Those seeking more power can opt for a Levante S, which sports the same engine but a more generous output of 424 hp. Pricing for the Levante S will start at $83,000, once again excluding destination.

The Levante’s pricing positions it well above most of the German rivals, including Porsche’s Cayenne which starts at $60k. Of course, Maserati is a much more exclusive marque so there was always going to be a premium for its new SUV.

The Levante is based on Maserati’s own platform, a modular design that also underpins the Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans. An 8-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, locking differential, air suspension with adjustable dampers, and driving modes selector are standard across the range.

There’s also a long list of options which includes things like a panoramic sunroof, premium leather from Ermenegildo Zegna, and Sport and Luxury packages. There isn’t a dedicated performance model just yet but we still have our hopes up for one. Though Maserati offers a diesel Levante in other markets, we’re not expecting this option here. Instead, we could see a plug-in hybrid Levante at some point.
