Smile New to Subarus!

Afternoon!

I have always been extremely intrested in the subaru WRX/STI models for years and after much thought i picked one up finally! I traded in my truck and sold my moto bikes (longer story, basically so i could stop getting hurt/surgeries from racing) and picked a STI up! I have been browsing the fourms for quite some time and it seems like there is a extremely tight knit group up here. If you would have it i would love to pick some of your brains for some information and would love to partake in some of the fun! If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Stage2 is only the tip of the iceberg, the first symptom of a far more serious and expensive disease.... enjoy!

make sure you save up your money for when your ringland fails and you need a new motor.

<== speaks from experience

Just let me know if you have any questions about your 08. Happy to answer what I can or steer you in the direction if I can't.

the HM exhaust is extremely nice. I love mine.

Think I know how to solve the 08+ ring landing issue. Its a tuner problem that the good tuners are just now catching on to. Subaru snuck in a new timing advance system that most didn't understand until the last few weeks.

In a nutshell everything is fine after the initial tune, then based on some complicated code the car will add in timing from a new table(s) that runs heavy advance and boom...broken ring landing.

Tuners are tuning the timing the way they always have in the past and were not adjusting for this event. Even the early STI code had these tables but they were not active the same way. The 08+ changes all of the logic.

The last cobb tune I reviewed was not updated to fix the issue for the stage 2. Many cars (almost new) are blowing up from harmless stage 2 tunes and min mods because of this....

Bottom line...I don't feel the 08+ cars are weaker, the code changed and the tuners didn't know.

well the OTS cobb access port map should be good. But i got a lot of other parts and am kind of wondering how do i tune it if there is no AWD dyno up here... sombody told me if you give a list of parts to COBB they will make a map for you and charge you 200 or somthing?

uh no...

I had mine set up on Cobb Stg 2 maps for the winter.. and my ringland failed.

Best bang for your buck will be calling up Jarrad from PDX Tuning and ordering yourself a nice stg 2 map. $150, well worth it.

Do some searches about how many people have blown up their new cars with OTS tunes on the 08's..Its staggering.

If you get the cobb tune and download the free tuning software I can walk you through disabling the killer timing maps(if cobb still has not fixed this). With our very low octane premium fuel here its easy to break stuff in AK.

i just called COBB and they offer somthing called a e-tune, where you go back and forth data logging and getting maps revised by a tuner. This is similar to what PDX does right? I have also heard of a tim bailey from surgeline tuning, this name ring a bell to anybody?

Not silly questions. Just make sure that what ever answers you get from here or anywhere on the internet you second guess them and verify.

Lots of advice, some good, some bad.

Yes, Tim is very good. many of us use Jarrad because he will fly up to tune us, not just do everything by phone or email only.

Welcome to AKIC. You have the blue 08 STi.

Its been stage 2 most of its life before you got it. I know this cause I know where the old stage 2 parts went when the previous owner returned it to stock and sold it.

I was running the Cobb stage2 OTS map before I started tearing my car apart. My wideband put it right where it should be as far as fueling. Also I logged alot with my tactrix and only detected the lightest amounts of timing being pulled mostly in 5th and 6th at MBT. By very little I mean 1/4 or 1/2 a degree of timing. Thats without any torco. I did a reset and starting using 1/3 bottle of torco per tank and never had any knock or timing being pulled.

07 STI maps ok.

Cobb usually is very very rich tunes unless there is a problem some where else with your car, i.e. fuel pump, fuel regulator, MAF, intake leaks, etc. Never seen a lean cobb tune but it sounds like others have.

Tuners idea of lean and rich vary. Poor fuel and low octane means you have to run the car rich to use the fuel as a band aid. The best balance of tq and hp for a turbo motor is found around 11.8:1 per many professional sources. Doing this on AK gas without additives or water injection is possible but it requires you to run less boost and less timing.

Finding the best mix boost, timing, and fueling is an art that is surrounded by barriers.

One degree of timing can make a 10-20 hp difference when you are well below MBT(best timing). 1 PSI of boost can make simular or more tq and HP increse. The difference between 10:1 AFR and 11:1 AFR can also make big power differences.

Knowing the above you have to decide what mix makes sense...More timing less boost more fuel? More boost less timing less fuel? Less fuel less boost more timing?

Lots of fun here. There are typical trends that these cars follow which I find nice. The cars are also very good at protecting themselves when they can. A good tuner can write in fail safes to a degree depending on the mods.
