Default 07 Impreza 2.5i swap. 02-05 ej205 or ej20x/y?

Hello, so I have a 07 Impreza A/T and my passenger side head went bad. I canít find anyone to sell a head here in California because everyone just wants to sell the engine complete. My engine has over 160k miles so Iím done spending money on this engine. Iíve even thought about dropping the same engine and selling my car for a wrx but no one sells Hawkeyes that are sorta clean and for a reasonable price out here. So I guess itís back to the original plan and swapping it all. Iím also going to be swapping it to manual. The issue is I need it to pass smog out here in Cali, so I just donít know to go with an older ej205 or a same year/newer ej20x/y. Thanks!

Can't answer the CA emissions, but my guess is neither will work because you'll need to retain the OEM ECU now that they check for tunes.

But to do a turbo engine swap into an 06+ NA requires fuel line changes. Subaru stopped using a fuel return line in the 06 NA models so you'll need to address this before installing any turbo engine into your car.

Yeah I really hate how stupid California is getting with these smog rules. Especially since they want all car manufacturers to only sell ev after 2030 I could MAYBE play around with that, cuz I was talking to a smog shop that could possibly pass it for me if I do a swap to a turboed ej. The fuel line is something I already have noted, I could find it really cheap and the shop Iím taking it to has no problem with it. I just donít know if the ej20x/y would be better or not just because of dbw they integrated for 05+

There's more to it than just the DBW. They are dual AVCS and meant to be run with a 32bit ECU. I know the 06+ WRX is single AVCS and 32bit and it's still a pain in the a** to swap them properly. Does your NA have a 16bit or 32bit ECU?

That at least means you should be able to use your ECU, most likely. Just make sure you do your research and talk with a competent shop that k owe their way around JDM swaps.
