Stickie Driveshaft
05 Impreza with new transmission
Recently the driveshaft snapped near the CV joint. Had to remove the shaft and stick the car in FWD to be able to move again. However, now I can't get the remaining driveshaft to come out of the Extension Cup on the transmission. There is play on the driveshaft piece, it slips in or out about an inch freely. It rotates freely. However, I cannot seem to get it out to put in the new driveshaft. Any advice as to why the piece will not come out completely?

Broke a DS?!?!
OK, since you stated, "put it into FWD" guess you have a AT? Really crude is a pipewrench on the DS remains out of the trans, then bang the crap out of the wrench with a 3lb hammer or larger. Should NOT need this. Period. It should be a slip fit. A weak butt 5yo should be able to pull the shaft out of the trans. Sure nothing is hanging it up?!?! If you broke the DS and it is this hard to remove the front part, my guess is you will be dropping the trans since the output shaft is FUBAR...... Just saying...... |

Grab it - push it in, and give it a good yank. If it slides back and forth it is probably just a little crust ring on the yoke hanging up on the seal. Only thing you'll hurt is your pride.

I've tried the push it in, heave out, pride is still hiding under the car.
I know how it should exit . . . I'll give the wrench through the CV and hammer a try and report back. |

If I were you, I'd use a piece of steel pipe that is just small enough to fit inside the yoke where the CV joint used to be. That way there would be less slop and greater energy transfer between the hammer and the yoke.
... and less chance of breaking the pipe wrench ... and I would strike both sides of the pipe, not just one side. |

Wait - now I am confused - are you talking the DRIVESHAFT for the rear diff or one of the front AXLES? Putting a car in FWD only helps if it is a driveshaft failure so I was talking about removing the rear driveshaft between the rear of the trans and the rear differential...

Based on that assumption, I am guessing splines (DS, trans output or both) are damaged/twisted, thus it's not coming apart. Thus my comment a trans drop may be in his future. |
