Default should i build my engine or buy an sti engine?

My goal is to have 300 whp no more then 320 to the wheels. What I would like to know is, would it be better to build the engine I have or buy a sti ver 7 engine? I have read threads where pushing over 350 to the crank piston # 4 was a problem. So could I build a strong engine for the price of an sti engine and have the reliability of the sti engine, or should I buy an sti engine?
thanks dave

Work... ahhh... so tired.

Default

well it all depends on how much work you want to do... and what you like.

Im going with a 2.2L and sti heads

you could go with just a usdm sti block and your heads... easy 300 with some goodies

If you like high reving then go with the 2.0 sti... The 8 to 9k redline would be fun...

Maybe 2 motors.....

I need another job.

what i'm trying to say is, if i'm going to spend 5000 dollars on an engine and another 2000 to install. can i build and engine that is as strong and able to handle a lot of power for tha kind of money, or should i just buy an sti engine and do a turbo up grade and call it quits.. i heard sti engines can handle upto 400 hp.. i have not built any engine before so dont know costs in doing so..

The question devolves to: Are you smarter than those STi guys?

from a stock parts, fit, and assembly quality... then yes.

can I redesign the engine on a technical standpoint? no.

the question simmer's on the back burner...

which is better...
a) stock subaru mass produced engine
b) stock engine w/ improved parts that are balanced

again, I would build an engine

Default Missing Something...

I think you may be missing something...

Do you have the drive train to put that power to the ground?

Do you have the brakes to stop it?

Of course, do you care?

Anyway, my point is you might want to think about just getting an STI and starting from there = stronger transmission = better brakes = vvt = larger displacement = better platform...

IMHO

I am sticking with my stage 2 car until I can get an STI for that very reason.

Im was/still in the same boat as you. I am going STi V7 Type RA. Nothing like a 8K redline and a fully built engine from the factory. Forged Crank, Rods, Pistons. The cylinder walls have more support as well on this motor.

If I wanted a "built" block, I would have either went Cobb 2.2L or Axis 2.4L.

For those kind of power levels, I would not worry about upgrading the actual engine for moment. Your EJ205 is not going to automaticly self destruct at over 300 dynapak whp. Find a very good tuner in your area and get a very good ECUTEK tune on a dyno. If you want over 300 whp on 93 octane, make sure your supporting mods are robust: good intercooling, big enough turbo, and I would suggest water injection. Upgrade the cooling system if the car is going to see track driving. If you can ward off the detonation, you motor will live for a plenty long time at 300 whp.

Depending on you driving habits, you may need a tranny sooner than later though.

Isnt there anything we can do to address this piston #4 problem specifically, before going to the extreme of swapping out a new block etc?
