Post it for posterity....although these cars are getting old, Phase 1 vs. Phase 2 differences are still a major issue w/swaps.

Thanks

The kids buying these old cars and doing these swaps can use all the cheap help they can get. Post it up!

A ph2 short block bolts in just fine to a ph1, and vise versa. The issue is with the wiring harness/intake. It's easier to keep the same heads in the car to keep the same manifold which will retain the same harness. If you're swapping things around like this you'll either raise or lower compression in doing so and may need a custom headgasket, which cometic probably already has a file on to make.

10 years later.... Glad i found this post but im in the process of doing this but reverse, im taking a 97 impreza with phase 1 EJ22(that jumped time) and putting in a Phase 2 EJ253 (that i already had), but after reading this im coming to the conclusion that i could just take the I.Manifold from the 2.2 block off the EGR and put in on the 2.5. If im wrong tell me (or ill find out soon enough.)

You'll want to keep reading and any Google search would answer this in 5 minutes...and please don't double-post the same request on the forum.

These are incompatible. Sell that EJ253 - should be worth $$ if any good - and buy another much cheaper '90-'98 EJ22 to swap back in...Read up.

And remember to change the timing belt, pulleys, and WP on the replacement.
