Default EJ 253 with EJ251 convert?

Hey yall. searched for a few weeks trying to find this answer before i start this. and i am not 100% i posted this in the correct forum if not please change it. Thanks.

last week my brothers 07 outback decided it wanted its own inspection hole in the block and exploded. heads thankfully did not suffer any visible damage but i still want them checked.. my problem is. all the salvage yards want 1800 for a used unknown condition longblock. i searched for a few days on forum after forum and finally came up with. the 253`s have different dished pistons to allow higher valve lift with the avls. but i still havent confirmed this..

My question. can i take an older EJ251 from say an 04 outback that my local junkyard has tons of and replace the pistons with new ones from subaru? or are they different in some other way that i havent been able to find? I`m a pro mechanic and can "Fix" most anything, but like to know all the details before i start. Thanks.,. and again if wrong place please move to correct one.
