Wow. That guy gets to be one of the first people to drive it?! If that's what's needed to be an auto journalist test driver, I'm in the wrong career

I think he hated every second of it and took it out on the gearbox and front tires.

But, most week days, I have to drive across town to drop my daughter off to daycare, it's probably 2 miles.
Then, I have to make it back across town once again to get to work and I make it a point to hit redline once or twice on my way there.
At that point, oil temp sits at 220~230 and tranny oil temp sits pretty at 180 .
This is my first turbocharged car. I know that letting a car warm up to operating temp is important for any car, but I think it's even more important in ours. The house I live in right now is right next to the freeway which seems to be a huge selling point for a home to most people. To me, it's so close that I don't even take that freeway entrance. By the time I get there from my house my oil temp is barely over 100. I find myself literally driving 10 minutes to another freeway entrance 3 miles away just so that by the time I merge onto the ramp, my oil temp is high enough so that I can get on the throttle a bit and merge safely

It made sense, I had a long highway commute, but I enjoy drive the driving experience to much to have it neutered like that. I bought a 2.5i with MT after that. I could live with that as winter driver, but I don't need a 3rd car dedicated winter beater. I have been doing the daily driver - summer toy vehicle for 23 years now, . Subaru WRX's and STI (and my Legacy GT that I own now) fit the need as a all year round daily driver. If I was going to do a NA Subaru daily, I wouldn't own turbo Subaru as my 3 season daily driver instead I would likely own high HP engine with rwd.

I would totally buy an AWD turbo'ed Subaru Minivan, if they made it.

I second that. My Kia Sedona has 276 hp, but only 248 lb/ft of torque (@ 5200 rpm).

The Ascent's 260 hp is lower, but that 277 lb/ft at 2000 rpm will do wonders for driveability & hauling people whether in Ascent form or minivan.

But, by the time Subaru gets around to making a minivan, I'll no longer need one.

Our '15 Town and Country has 283 hp / 260 lb-ft NA. Never once found it lacking driveability. Maybe it's the FWD - too easy to spin tires already.

Had an Edge rental (2.0T, FWD I believe) and that thing would light up the tires in the front from 15-40 mph if there was even a touch of moisture on the roads. Probably needed better tires..

Why would Subaru make a minivan if the Ascent comes with 8 seats? SUV is a lot more versatile (eg 8.7" clearance) than a minivan, not to mention looks more cool.

I can spin my front tires too, even with a throttle inhibitor in first gear, and quite often do when turning and accelerating, but I gotta rev to get the power. With the Ascent's torque hitting its peak so low, with AWD, it'll just go. No hesitation, no spinning, no throttle inhibitor, just go.

Even if there's a slight bit of turbo lag, it'll be better than my peak torque at 5200.

That's a good point, though minivan interiors are usually more usable than SUV.

In my Sedona, the middle row side seats flip the seat cushion forward while the seatback also moves forward, making a nice clear passage to the rear seats. The Ascent, like most other SUVs, leans the seatback and slides the seat cushion, leaving less room to pass through.

Also, lower floor in minivan + deep well in the rear = more storage space.

Edit: Well, maybe the Ascent isn't so bad for rear access:
