Default Cabinet refacing. Anyone done this before?

I want to change the cabinets in my kitchen. It's the plain Jane wood cabinets without door handles.

Is it as simple as priming it and painting it white? What kind of paint? What kind of primer? Do I need to sand it?

Are most cabinet doors exchangable? Me wants the window type.

White cabinets....yets, it's metrosexual but it's my kitchen and I do the cooking.

looking into it too, but I tell you this: not as simple as paint. any good paint shop/hardward can help if you know the material (laminated I'll bet)

Hinge types'll be the hangup, dep. on the age of yer cabs.

Wood lamminate or real wood? If it's laminate, forget it..the paint will come off.

I recommend the Dragon Eats Knight line of products.

Laminate can be sanded and painted or re-laminated.

I haven't refinished cabinets (want to replace mine instead), but I've looked around and you can order peel-n-stick veneer for the box and order new doors/drawers. There's also a company called kitchen tune-up that does custom refinishing (they advertise it's thousands less than replacing cabinets). Look around online, there are some good articles on the necessary prep work and tips for DIY.

Here's my thread on the topic just weeks ago. Hopefully it helps.

How old are the cabinets? You can just get new cabinet fronts.

I'm having this done right now in our master bathroom and kitchen. They are just changing out the plain doors to nicer beveled fronts. I just took the dimensions to a cabinetmaker and got a quote for new cabinet doors.

You have lots of options...
