You also have to consider the fact that bigger doesn't always mean better. You have to be careful with that.

Nice one
I mean in the sense that many think that a bigger/larger filter means more filtration/oil passage. This may not always be true. I don't have any facts or readings to prove this with the new blue oil filters... I just wanted to throw that out there. I could be completely incorrect in regards to the blue filters. |

There is a lot of info around about how small a particle needs to be filtered to not cause wear, so would think the finer the filter the better, but then They plug up sooner and open the bypass valve, and then how stiff should the bypass spring be on it, and the sube ones are said to be stiff. I read at above 3500prm, the valve will open. I think a filter that is bigger that filters small particles would be better than a small one that filters good. I believe I read that the blue sube filter has a paper medium, while a combo of paper, synthetic fibers and fiberglass ones filter finer particles. Can always add a bypass oil filter that filters down to 1 or 2 microns, for 200$.
Honda recommends changing the filter Every Other oil change, or 15K mi, so what does That say? |

Honda's also don't have turbo chargers and AWD systems and the likes which cause more wear on the engine and it's oils.

can't see how AWD puts more wear on a motor, and does a water cooled turbo still coke the oil, even synthetic? If Honda recommends 15Kmi in NA motors, wouldn't that say the filters are good for at least that long in them? Wonder what could be different with Theirs, Maybe Bigger filters?

[quote=modaddict;25928607]The reality is, the relief valve in the oil FILTER should NEVER open. /quote]
From the engine designer's viewpoint, there is a trade-off. Some users will employ high engine speeds on a cold engine (think North Dakota winters). Making a filter sufficiently porous to avoid relief-valve operation would then require a quite inefficient filter. It is better to rely on the relief valve opening during extreme conditions, in order to permit finer and slightly more restrictive filtering during more typical engine operating patterns. |
