use some chemical solution to harden the stock tranny gears?

It is not a chemical process, there is a process of freezing the item, making it a whole lot sronger. There is a guy in the toyota field doing this process with the front axles (birfield joints). Just check the internet for this process, i cant remember the name, sorry.

not strong enough to handle a turbo kit...just buy a full synchro set.

yes an STi tranny is fully synchroed...but i don't understand what you are trying to accomplish, i'd go with an aftermarket syncrho'ed gearset before another subaru trans.

what choices do i have for aftermarket synchro'ed gearset?
and how much do they range from?
