GC/GF/GM exhaust - what changed on mid-pipe in '99?
Subaru lists 2 different part numbers for the mid-pipe for the early cars (up to '98) and the late cars ('99-01). parts.subaru.com doesn't have real pictures of them, so I'm not sure what actually changed.
Looking at aftermarket stock replacement stuff on rockauto.com, some manufacturers list different parts numbers for -'98 vs '99+, but others list a single part that covers the whole range of 1st gens. That would lead me to believe the difference is not the inlet/outlet flanges (clocked differently or different bolt spacing) and is not the location of the hanger on the mid-pipe. The reason for the question is that I'm debating what exhaust to put on my '96 Brighton. Previous owner said the exhaust on it had come off a '98 2.5RS, but the axle-back is clearly an '04+ STI muffler that's had the inlet flange modified. Whoever did that didn't do it well, so the mid-pipe and axle-back don't fit well. I've done a half-assed fix a couple of times now to make it fit better, but I'm thinking maybe it's time I just replace the whole damn thing. It would be nice to go with a Stromung stainless setup, but they say their setup only fits '99+ because the mid-pipe changed. As I said above, Subaru's part numbers show that what Stromung says is true, but I don't know what is actually different. Anyone know? |
