Despite being surpassed by SUV sales, the sedan market is still lucrative. Acura's problem is that Honda builds a better sedan for the money in the Accord.

Yeah, Acura's other problem is they don't have much street value because it alienated most car enthusiasts with the excessively priced NSX. I don't associate Acura with performance cars any more after RSX-S (if you want to call that a performance car) was gone 20 yrs? ago. TSX TL ILX TLX all muck.

Performance car is debatable but it was definitely a fun and sporty car that would have been fast enough for the majority of non-car enthusiasts at the time - although only coming with a 6-speed, I suppose you would be considered an "enthusiast" if you had one. I had one and it was a hoot. It was responsive, practical (liftback ftw), quick enough for me as a college student at the time, got decent gas mileage, and just an overall joy to drive. It had no frills or modern creature comforts, I don't think it even had an AUX cable jack as I remember using a Monster casette adapter to play music from my iPhone

Most importantly, it had character. The Vtec was bitchin' and I miss having a car that you could rev all the way up with confidence. It didn't turn heads but it was cool to the people who knew what it was. I had an 06 in Jade Green Metallic with the A-Spec kit. I miss that thing dearly and hope I can find one that hasn't been molested for cheap sometime down the road.

It's 2in wider then the current car? That puts it wider the the old TLs.

Looks nice. Shrink it to 4/5ths size and offer it as the ILX.

Interesting stuff, especially from Acura. Nice interior too. The Type S is the only thing I'd actually take a look at, but expectations are still that it would be boring. It's a shame, because Honda/Acura do a lot of things really well, but those things never really come together to make a compelling car. In the video, they make a point of emphasizing that this is so much MORE than any previous Acura. HUGE horsepower bump, retuned AWD, amazing seats, 10 sp transmission, etc... But in reality, I would expect it to have 320-340hp, with another 15hp in an overboost mode; 65% front bias on the AWD, no tactile feedback to feel more "luxurious"... I guess what I'm getting at is that if this car is to change the perception of Acura, they have a lot of "Meh..." to overcome.

I wonder if Acura will match performance of the M340i xDrive with the Type S or if they'll go soft and justify it by asking less money. The M340i xDrive is mid-$60's for what will likely be comparably equipped to the Acura. Sounds like both no tri pedal.

Quote:
2020 BMW M340i Is a Rocket of an Everyday 3-Series

With its 382-hp turbocharged inline-six, BMW's semi-spicy compact sedan lives life on fast forward.

Soft words like "peppy" no longer accurately describe the six-cylinder 3-series. It's frenetic now, even brutal. The rear-drive version (all-wheel drive is optional) hits 60 mph from a standstill in 3.8 seconds and its 30-to-50-mph passing time of 2.4 seconds is in league with vastly more powerful cars. It feels like by the time you're fully in the passing lane, it's already time to pull back to the right. And yet the B58 straight-six remains the pinnacle of smoothness, almost electric in its vibration-free power delivery.

HIGHS: 382 reasons to smile, plus a great ride.

Despite the unexpected drag-strip bent, the 2020 M340i is still very much a 3-series, as the species is commonly known. Longer than the outgoing car both overall and between the axles, and with wider tracks front and rear, it adeptly blends rough-road comfort with composure at the limit. With optional Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires measuring 225/40R-19 up front and 255/35R-19 in the rear, that lateral limit is 0.96 g.

LOWS: Manual deathwatch intensifies, stubbornly retrograde interior design.

Audi, Mercedes, and even Genesis are redefining interior quality in this class, and yet BMW is resolutely sticking to obviously synthetic and rubberized plastic on the dash and doors. It's a shame the company wouldn't fight for the manual the way it's apparently fighting to keep this stuff. No stick is available with any 3-series engine until the next M3 arrives. But that rubbery material does make the car feel familiar, and when you pitch it down a winding road, you realize this is the opposite of an identity crisis. This is exactly what a 3-series should feel like-on fast forward.

I don't think it's going to be close to the M340i in acceleration. The B58 in the M340i makes an underrated 382 hp while this Type S is rumoured to make around 350 hp in a bigger and likely heavier car. That said I think the Type S looks more striking so Honda fans for the first time in ages will finally have the chance to purchase a good looking car.

+1 Definitely can't go by the paper spec sheet on the Bimmers.. they tend to have a lot more power than what's on paper.. plus so easy to tune for even more power.

Yeah, I don't think so either.

From the sound of one of the articles I read: it sounds like while they haven't released any power figures, they seem to have informed journalists that the target of the car is the S4. So I would imagine, that's what they are benchmarking and aiming to beat. The new 3-series is now monstrously fast, I don't think Acura's ambitions are that high.

Is this supposed to be a 3 series sized car? Modern cars are so bloated now it's hard to keep track of how big these things are. Even "compact" cars are large.

The Type S has been spotted testing alongside the BMW 340i, MB C43 and Audi S4. That's their benchmark. Dimensions wise this car seems bigger than those models.

+1 not really interested in humongous sedans, but the styling is terrific (outside anyway), so shrink it and I'd be interested. Making it a hatchback S5 Sportback competitor would be too much to wish for.

The M340 is no lightweight either; nearly 4000 lbs (3968 lbs) in AWD trim.
And, with 12.1 sec in the 1/4 at nearly 113 mph, with a 4000 lbs curb weight, it's clear than the B58 makes at least 420-hp at the crank.
I hope Acura has shot for as close as possible to 400-hp and has kept things right around 4000 lbs as well; I think one of the limiting factor for Acura will be torque rating/capacity of their "beefed up" transverse 10-speed tranny.
BMW is already right at the limit of their ZF 8HP50/8HP51 with the M340i/Z4 and 2020 Supra.

Modern cars are getting so crazy fast. A "normal" BMW sports sedan doing a 12 second flat quarter? That used to take something like a Dodge Viper in good weather condition.

It's just insane how good cars (besides the STI) are getting.

It's also goes to show how ridiculously underrated this M340 xDrive really is; 113 mph trap speed, 12.1 secs, 4000 lbs curb weight with 382-hp at the crank? GTFO .

But yeah, B58 is a monster. One of the most underrated engines with crazy potential, right next to that 2.5 TFSI...Ayyy full beast mode with some bolt-ons and corn.

2021 Acura TLX Type S Will Cost at Least $50,000, Base Model Gets $4,500 Price Hike
Chris Tsui
The base TLX packs 66 more horsepower and now it rides on its very own chassis, not a re-purposed Honda one.

Acura
Even before getting behind the wheel, we can already tell Acura's all-new TLX is a sizable leap forward in comparison to the outgoing sedan. Evidently, Acura thinks so too because when the base 2021 TLX goes on sale at the end of next month, it'll have a starting price of $38,525 including destination, a whole $4,500 higher than its direct predecessor.

To be fair, that extra $4,500 does buy quite a bit more car. The 2021 TLX sports a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, while the least-expensive previous-gen TLX is saddled with a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter making just 206 hp and 182 pound-feet.

Acura points out that the new four-pot TLX is only $1,300 more expensive than the outgoing V6 with which it probably compares more fairly. It's also worth noting that the last TLX was, ultimately, based on the ninth-gen Honda Accord while this new version is, according to Acura, built on its own model-exclusive chassis.

Equipping your 2021 TLX with any Technology, A-Spec, or Advance Packages steadily brings the bill up through the $40,000 range. Super Handling All-Wheel Drive can be had for an extra $2,000 while front-wheel drive remains standard. Keep in mind that dollar values in the pricing chart below do not include the $1,025 destination charge.

Acura

Those of you identifying as "enthusiasts" will likely be more interested in the hotted-up Acura TLX Type S. Annoyingly, Acura has yet to release a solid price breakdown for the V6-powered car but did say that the Type S would "arrive next spring well-equipped in the low-to-mid $50,000s," putting it right in line with cars like the BMW M340i, Audi's S4, and the Mercedes-AMG C 43. For your $50,000 or so, the 2021 Acura TLX Type S packs an all-new, turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 pumping out approximately 355 hp and 354 pound-feet of torque.

Other TLX highlights include the return of double-wishbone front suspension and an innovative new airbag that appears to takes inspiration from the world of baseball.

The Type S better be SH-AWD only. Will be interesting to see if the "model-exclusive chassis" stays that way for long. IMO if it is good, it would be dumb to not have it scalable for use throughout Acura's lineup to take advantage of the SH-AWD system and the (luxo segment) trend toward AWD all the things.
