I'm confused... I thought they said there was going to be a 10***37; increase in fuel economy. These are closer to a 5% increase... am I missing something?

I would say gearing plays a large role in the mileage aspect. The new 08 have longer gears (first, 2nd and 3rd) than the 07, which could help in raising the mileage by a bit. The Auto could also have such a situation.

If they were really concerned about fuel economy they should have dropped a 6 speed into the WRX to allow for some nice highway cruising.

I have yet to figure out the EPA ratings...I get well over their ratings everywhere I drive. I average 22 in stop and go traffic and almost 30 cruising on the highway.

Maybe the EPA ratings have changed? I think I remember hearing that the new ratings would be more accurate than past ratings.

This is why I placed the new ratings and [old ratings] side by side.

For 2008, the "new ratings" is what we'll see on the window sticker, and is the result of a revised EPA testing method, which is supposed to more closely represent real-world driving conditions.

For 2007, the "new ratings" listed are derived from the old ratings (what was on the 07 window stickers) based on a formula. And the "old ratings" listed for the 2008s are likely the same formula, calculated the other way.

I don't think the proposed increase in CAFE (fleet mpg) standards has passed both houses of Congress yet, though if it does, auto makers have a few years yet to meet the criteria. Either way, it's not something that's going to affect anything for MY2008.
