Default Alternatives to STi 6MT

I've been thinking for quite a while about a transmission upgrade for the power that I haven't made yet. I'm a bit confused now. I assumed that the Forrester XT and Legacy GT both had the same transmission as the STi, but now it looks like I was wrong. So, first off, the trannies are different, right? Would this be an upgrade even worth considering on a 2004 WRX? I don't have definate plans right now, but I'll probably end up around 300WHP with a fast spooling setup.

What know is this, my 05 wrx makes about 330 -300whp giving the dyno, and so far the tranny has been fine just like it was new. The driving style really tends to determine the life of the trannies in all year wrx's. You do have an advantage as the 04 - 05 and up transmissions have a stated wider gear engagement area then the previous years, thus giving up more strenght on paper. When ever we discuss transmissions the issue always becomes money, all the alternitives cost a lot of money.
The way i see it there are only two when u have an 04 - 05 wrx. PPG gears and 6mt.
You can swap in a 6mt for less really. There are some threads on here that talk about what u need but really nothing beats the ease of doing a full tranny swap over installing gears in a 5mt.

Read the Transmission FAQ that is in the sticky at the top of the forum. It will have all your answers.

Token-Negro I laugh everytime I read your screen name.

There are two advantages to doing the 5MT. You keep the lighter trans and it is better for 1/4 mile racing. Then again the 6MT synchros are better, but Andrew at Gearboxtech can do things to the 5MT to make it shift almost as well.

change your final drive and rear ring gear to a 4.444. it'll give less stress on your gears.

^ True.

Except you'll want to be in boost all the time though too! Good for fun, bad for wallet.

Swapping to the FXT box is the same thing as swapping your FD to 4.444, as wrxtool said, but without the hassle of cracking open your existing gearbox and rear diff. So long as you can find one for a good price, that's the way to go.

that isn't on most of the JDM units floating around, which also happen to have more aggressive 5th and 6th gearing than the USDM units which have the DCCD system.

Also, the 6mt diffs are an impovement on what is found on the 5mt, especially in 6MT's that have the suretrack front LSD

IIRC, the spec C is the only 6MT that has the DCCD, and they are hard to find...

sure you can... but by the time you do that, you still have 5 gears with still questionable durability at elevated power levels.... but as always, driving style will determine if and how long the 5mt will live at elevated power levels.

I find the the 6mt really helps to keep larger turbos on boil. The 5mt isn't so great at this unfortunately...With a smaller turbo it is fine, but as you go bigger, the gearing seems off....
