Hm, that was odd.
After this morning going to school, after a near collision by some dick who stopped deciding to let me go, I hit the brakes, then the clutch so I didn't stall, then I hit the gas hard to get out of the way and slipped the clutch, the clutch only came up half way. I was high in the revs so I hit the clutch again and shifted to 2nd, still only came up halfway. I hit the clutch and glided down the street to my school and let it up, it came up fine.
Should I be worried? I already asked Soob to soothe my mind, he said I shouldn't worry. I worry so much about my baby.

I had an odd thing happen to me thursday morning on the way to work. I was just cruising up 128, when I heard a loud detonation. It was so loud I could "feel" it on my back, through the seat. I looked around thinking a tractor trailer might have blown a tire, but there was none around, unless he was traveling the other way. One of those freak things.
And it might be worth getting the clutch looked at, if it starts happening frequently, or isn't too much of a hassle to get the car to a dealer... |

Its the first time it ever happened. If it happens again, its going to the dealer. I think maybe because I was practically flooring it because it was a tense situation and didn't let up on the clutch as much as I accidentally slammed the gas, it wouldn't release the clutch or something. Or it could be a simple case of the damn floormats stuck on the clutch. It was like 50 feet down the road to school so I didn't have a chance to try it out, but the clutch worked fine after the two times it wouldn't come all the way. I'll let you know after school on the way home.

Yep, that was odd.
I think maybe someone ought to Sticky this thread! I mean... yeah it's about your story Deus, but a lot of us have "weird" mechanical happenings we could write about. Could be an interesting thread in a few days' time.
I had a weird one two nights ago. Christine and I were driving home from a friend's home, which is all of about a mile away, when suddenly I got this horrendously strange noise about a block from my parking lot. Sort of a squealing sound, not sure where it was coming from. Don't think it was the brakes, because it didn't happen when I was stepping on them.... Don't think it was the clutch, because I stopped the car and tried depressing and letting up, a few times.... Didn't seem to repeat itself the next day, or this morning either. -S2- |

Mine's been doing a very random metallic 'pop' or 'bang' sound since the day I bought it. I only hear it once a week and can't make it happen, so I haven't pursued it.. Sound comes from the transmission area, sorta under the shifter at the bottom of the car. Most often happens after a hard push on the gas in low gear, then totally letting off.. I've got 22,000 miles to figure it out.

So it's not like an exhaust pop kind of a noise? I used to get that a lot in my car, haven't noticed it in a long while, though. Switching to mid-grade gas helped a little....
..I think... |

I had something like that happen to me on my first car...a lovely 1986 Mazda 626. Since you have a new car I doubt this would be the problem, but ya never now.
My battery came loose after the bracket broke, the battery fell right on top of the clutch mechanism. The weight of the battery held the linkage down. I had to use my foot to push the pedal down, and then pull it back up until I could get to a safe place to check it. /bill |

Several very odd things happening in my car.
1. Started noticing this at VIR 2 weeks ago. After the car has been driven hard, or simply a while, the rear suspension will make a "thump" kind of sound, even at very low speed. Any cornering or loading force will cause it. No noise when car is cold. Suspension and Whiteline swaybar parts seem all to fasten tightly, and bushings don't seem broken. 2. My trailer hitch has "migrated" by about an inch on the driver's side back. Well, it's very very odd. The car hasn't been rear-ended, and the bumper cover looks perfect from outside. However, if you look under, the one grommet that holds the bumper cover to the frame is broken and gone, and the holes don't line up anymore. Also, my trailer hitch was biting into the bumper cover, which wasn't happening when it was installed 8 months ago. The car was towed by the trailer hitch at Team O'Neil twice, but I still don't understand how that can move the parts around, as the hitch is still fastened to the frame perfectly. 3. The front passenger window had sometimes gave me a thump when raising from the all-down position, since the car was new. The other day, I found a pink piece of plastic *inside* the window sill! How did it get in? I took it out, and that thump hasn't returned. Oh, Subarus...! -Ray |

Phil,
you have a warranty. Either take it to IRA (where you bought it) or set up an appointment at Exeter. Roger |

I had a dead clutch pedal once. It had to do with the slave and cylinder under the air filter box. I had cleaned my engine bay with simple green and this degreased the slave piston and lever. As I regreased it I pushed the lever by hand and as I got back in my car to check if the squeek was gone, thats when I noticed my clutch pedal went limp (flat to the floor).
Quite a different scenario but check the slave and lever to make sure its properly lubed and free moving. You may need a friend to hit the clutch as you check it out. Hope that helps. Steve |

I had a strange sqeal a few times also. At first I wasn't sure what or where it was coming from. I'm somewhat convinced now that I had gotten a pebble stuck up in the brakes somewhere. Its happened twice and both times I put 'er into reverse and heard something tink off the wheel. Its a possibility. good luck steve |

doobie,
Nope, that's not the sound... I know because I've gotten the "junk stuck in the brakes" noise a lot, before. Especially after driving down a freshly-paved road. It goes away quickly enough... That's a LOUD obnoxious squeal... this thing I heard last night was quieter, and had a bit of a grind to it... Hell I forget. |

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but the clutch is hydraulic, right? Maybe cuz of the emmergency manuver that you did, it lost some of its pressure and for a few seconds there it didn;t have the pressure to lift the pedal all the way up, and it took you pushing down on it those 2 times to build up the pressure so it could spring back up???
I have NO idea if thats even possible, but like I know that if you pump the brakes on a car, you build up the pressure, and the pedal usual moves up and gets a little firmer. So am I nuts, or does that sound semi plasible? |
