Gasoline for cleaner air
Your use of gasoline with detergent additives will help prevent deposits from forming in your engine and fuel system. This helps keep your engine in tune and your emission control system working properly, and is a way of doing your part for cleaner air. If you continuously use a high quality fuel with the proper detergent and other additives, you should never need to add any fuel system cleaning agents to your fuel tank.

Many gasolines are now blended with materials called oxygenates. Use of hese fuels can also help keep the air cleaner. Oxygenated blend fuels, such as MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl ether) or ethanol (ethyl or grain alcohol) may be used in your vehicle, but should contain no more than 15% MTBE or 10% ethanol for the proper operation of your SUBARU. In addition, some gasoline suppliers are now producing reformulated gasolines, which are designed to reduce vehicle emissions. SUBARU approves the use of reformulated gasoline.

for a 'gasoline' engine, ethanol on the principle that it's cleaner and slightly more sustainable than the other options.

otherwise, we should be looking at running diesel engines on bio-diesel made from vegetable oil.

henry ford designed his car to run on ethanol from hemp, a renewable resource we are perfectly capable of growing in abundance -- hemp practically grows itself, it also is highly resistant to pests and requires very little if any pesticides.

sad to say I have 92 with 10%. My 04 ran perfect before our state switched to 10%. After the first 2 full tank fills... my car went to crap. Yup...that nice solvent you put into your tank upon fill up everytime does wonders to clean your gas tank.. and junk up everything down the line.

I work on boat motors and without going into detail.... screw whoever thought using corn based alcohol for a gas mixture was a good idea...lol.

If you're worried about quality (octane), anyone who thinks gas with ethanol is worse is stupid. It may get you worse gas mileage, but really for E10(93 + 10%), the loss in mileage is ~3%. Many E85 tunes make MORE power than say 93 or 91 octane tunes. Koenigsegg decided to design the CCXR to run E85 tunes... The E85 version makes 200+ more HP than the gasoline version. From the wiki about Ethanol fuel, "E85 is a high performance fuel, with an octane rating of about 104, and should be compared to premium."

You summed it up. Ethanol is clean and gas leaves varnish and dirt behind. Why that makes ethanol bad i dont know.

Forgot to mention its water absorbing properties are great for engines also. Cleans twice as good. Thats why I trust going on my boat with ethanol gas. I just love to hear my engines sputter with clogged injectors..or carbs... waiting to die on me. At least I know my fuel lines and tanks are clean..lol.

where i usually get gas, there's a 10cent difference usually between 87, 89, and 91; but only 2-3 cent difference between the 91 and 93. i believe most places (if not all?) just bump the octane from 91 to 93 by adding ethanol. same with the places that have 92, they use ethanol to bump the 89 to 92 is my guess. the pumps usually say "up to 10% ethanol", so the amount is probably different depending on the octane.

i don't have a turbo so i usually just use 89, but my brother has a wrx. he gets a bit better gas mileage using the 91.

also i don't know anything about tuning but i read some thread a while ago where they had a higher injector duty cycle for 93 vs 91.

I know I know, holy thread revival batman, but I thought asking in here would be better then starting a new thread.

My question is I have access to ethanol free gas through my job for a good price. Problem is it is 87 octane. Could I use an octane booster additive to get it up to 91/3 or should I not bother and just run 91/3 with ethanol?

Thanks

You wont get 87 up to 93 with any additive. Other then a slight loss of milage, there really is not big issue with 93 that has "Up to 10% Ethanol". The main thing to watch for is the issue that Ethanol absorbs water from the air, and fuel guidelines give E10 blended fuels a 4 week lifespan from when the fuel is delivered to the gas station. Most people will tell you that the 4 weeks is conservative. I have had the stuff sit in my bike for 10 weeks in humid south Florida and had no issues. But also down here, most car dealers will tell you about customers that come back from spending the summer up North and find that their cars don;t run right and the injectors are plugged up and the fuel is no good after 6 months at the "summer home".

Have you ever seen a new boat with problems? When I bought my 4 Winns, everyone seemed all hyped about ethanol. I asked at the marina and they told me that it was a problem for older boats with tons of crud in the tanks. The ethanol brings the crap into the gas and so you're running on the water and crap that's been in there for years. My understanding is that it's like dry gas and takes all the moisture out of the system. With my boat, I had no problems ever. I trailered, so almost never used marine gas....it all came from the station on the way to the lake.

This thread needs a pole. I'd check off the "I use 87 with ethanol" option.

Ethanol has the molecular formula CH3CH2OH. It is a unique molecule in that it is amphipathic. This means it has both polar and nonpolar characteristics, with the hydroxy (OH) group responsible for its polar character and the CH3CH2 responsible for its nonpolar character. This means that, while it is miscible with largely nonpolar gasoline, it can also mix with water. Adding ethanol to gasoline should, in theory, increase the solubility of water in gas because the ethanol molecules could form micelles around the water, with the polar hydroxy group of ethanol interacting with the polar water and the nonpolar tails of ethanol sticking out into the gasoline. This, in effect, shields polar water from nonpolar gasoline.

While the addition of ethanol-infused gas to your boat may be bad for it because of the extra stuff in your tank (I'm no expert), based n my understanding the amount of water that would be added to the gas would be negligible. Further, water is a byproduct of combustion anyways so it likely would have no effect on the engine. The crud, however, is another story. However I believe that the crud at the bottom of your tank is insoluble in general and thus the addition of a semi polar solvent wouldn't change anything. So yeah I doubt gas with ethanol would be bad.

"Southern Maine"

Not close enough to get 93 in NH? I'm pretty sure I'm correct that NH has 93, right?

Stewart's Shops in upstate NY are now selling ethanol free 91 octane. I have been using Sunoco Ultra93 exclusively. I am going to try this for a few tanks and see if there is any difference..

Try Stewarts

91 ethanol free is available at many Stewart's shops near my house.

It isn't available in the winter, but now you should be able to find it easily!

BTW Stewart's doesn't seem to carry 93 octane, but I refill with 93 when it is available over 91 at other gas stations.

(PS, just saw Botwin suggest the same thing...LMAO....)

There's a station here with 92 non ethanol VS. other stations 93 with 10% ethanol. Have run in it for 2 tanks now and get 1.5 mpg better mileage. It's $0.65 more per gallon but true fuel cost is $0.20 vs $0.22 per mile, pretty insignificant. Car feels better with the non, too.

It's true, and here's a list of their locations which carry it: http://www.stewartsshops.com/news/et...-select-shops/. Somebody should run some comparison tests.
