There's a lot of problems with the location and composition since it just looks like you took a pic of a car in a parking lot, without any other forethought put into it. The low elevation is good, but your subject takes up so much of the frame that it looks like it should be centered, instead of almost randomly having extra space at the bottom right corner.

Your second roller is the best out of the three, simply because it's the sharpest. You definitely need to use a polarizer on those though, especially when shooting a black car. Also, next time make sure the windows are up and that the driver isn't looking at you while driving, since your eyes go instantly to that.

As for the vintage feel shot, I don't necessarily think the car calls for it personally. That's not the main issue with the photo though...the main issue is the location and composition.

i do have a polarizing filter on there, i honestly didn't have time to adjust as i was shooting with one hand reaching across the car and driving with the other

the vintage shot, i can't catch a break, he wouldn't move from the parking spot so thats what i had to work with.

i have a question, i've been looking into ND filters, any suggestions as to which one to get because i can't figure it out.

Yeah then conditions were getting worse by the minute and my hands were freezing but I did my best. I had the CP filter on there but didn't mess with it at all really. I was too worried about keeping the camera dry! I'll post a few more later.

Well, you know me...not having time to adjust isn't going to cut it, and you also know I've said not to shoot while driving either if you want to get a good rolling shot Thus, you've already put yourself at a disadvantage there.

Same thing with the vintage shot...if he wouldn't move from the parking spot, then it's not worth trying to get something cool out of it unless you're going to composite it onto a completely different background. Even then, I don't think it's worth it, considering he couldn't even give you enough courtesy to move his car for a nice photo.

As far as ND filters go, it all depends on what you're going to use it for. I have both a 3-stop and an 8-stop ND filter. These resemble the f-stops on your camera, so think of it as stopping down your aperture. The higher the stop number, the less light it's going to let in. When I shoot on the track, I typically stack my 3-stop ND filter and my polarizer, which ends up being about 4.5-5 stops total. That's the key to being able to shoot slow pans in bright sunlight, like this 1/10 sec pan:

Stacking the 3-stop ND and the polarizer also works great for rig shots too:

I use the 8-stop when doing landscape stuff, since 8-stop is very, VERY dark. You honestly have a hard time seeing anything with the 8-stop on and depending on your camera, you'll more than likely have to manual focus since there won't be enough light coming in for autofocus. Here's an example using the 8-stop, with a 20-sec exposure at almost 3 pm back in March:

Living in Seattle, keeping the camera dry is something we constantly have to deal with. Even something as simple as a plastic garbage back with a hole poked through it for the lens works great. I usually have a few small garbage bags in my camera bag all the time just in case I have to deal with rain.

It'll also depend on your camera body too. Most consumer level camera bodies aren't weather-sealed very well, but the higher you go up in camera model, the more they can stand up to extreme conditions. I shot Subiefest 2 during a torrential downpour for most of the day without any protection on my D200 and it worked great with zero problems, whereas some other people's cameras completely froze up on them once they got wet.

Here's a few more.

The rear of the car is a little soft on this one but I feel it doesn't take away from the picture. I like this one a lot.

borrowing this D4 w/ 70-200mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.4 from my dad for a little.

Took it and immediately realized he had NO CP!! Gaaahhhh. Now I ordered one and will have to give it back before it arrives, so I won't get to borrow it again until next week!

No worries though, I AM NOT WORTHY of this setup.

okay so this is an idea i've been thinking of and turns out i wasn't the first one. however i can't think of the proper background to replicate this shoot in.

so you would be shooting a mirror and hte car would be in the mirror but the background would be somethign relevantly simple as to make the car/mirror almost look like it belongs?

i dont want to do this in an empty parking lot, so any ideas or suggestions please help me out, i'm going to try to do this in the coming week once i find a mirror big enough at home depot

i'm just trying to get creative, i'm kind of tired of just shooting my car to be honest. i know i'm not that good but snapping the same angles all the time of the same thing and around here with the same locations i get uninspired.

Be careful with this, and make sure you read the terms and conditions. They basically say they get to own your photo forever and can use it for anything, not to mention put their own words/watermark on it. Personally, I hate contests like this.

As for the last shot, I don't mind the guardrail so much as how dark the photo is overall. Jeff's edit is a good example of how good it can look with a bit more exposure. If you keep it as dark as it is, I think the car just kinda gets lost with everything else because of the tones involved.
I actually had the polarizer on and used it but I'm still having issues where what I see on camera doesn't match what I get on pc screen (pc screen matches prints from bayphoto). I'm shooting raw only and the shots from this set were all 1/2 a stop or more off from what I saw on camera preview. While shooting the set I was achieving neutral or +1/3 exposure according to the camera meter. I can't trust my camera and it is frustrating. I tried using the histogram but when preview shows me overexposing areas it is hard to determine which is right.

With the dark shot, I liked how it showed off the lines of the car. I have another frame with proper exposure and it didn't really do anything for me, I didn't feel like the car stood out.

Jealous! I have not had the pleasure of using a D4 yet...but you're gonna love both of those lenses. I'd totally get that 85mm ƒ1.4 if I wasn't waiting to see if Nikon comes out with a 135mm ƒ2 VR.

Fantastic idea! But yeah, you definitely need a good background to match. You could even do a street scene of sorts and make it work, but a parking lot would be pretty blah I think.

Nice stuff! I like the second shot the best because of the action involved. They're a tiny bit underexposed for my tastes, but that could just be me.

Out of everything, what you've really gotta trust is your histogram. The camera preview can easily be inaccurate, but the histogram won't be.

Here are a couple really quick photos I took last Saturday after our big car show. It was a favor for my friend (who owns the white car) and he explicitly told me not to spend very much time on them. Each photo was handheld, ISO 800, ***402;5.6, with the first one at 1/20 sec and the second one at 1/50 sec:

No I haven't. That was only my third time at the track with my camera. I'm not really sure what other compositions to do. I mostly stuck with panning because I wanted to practice and those are my favorite type of shots. As I said before the conditions were terrible and I barely got a single shot with the whole car in focus. I look forward to next season, hopefully with some better gear and techniques!!

Shame your on the other side of the country, would love to meet up for some in-person tips and maybe you could 'sample' the camera/lens on my car!

Hahaha -- I also have in my possession the 135mm f/2 (no VR) so I'm looking forward to putting that on for some portraits.

The 85mm 1.4 is INCREDIBLE.

I need to buy new glass...there's only so much I can do with a 50 f1.8, 10-22, and the kit lens. I've been looking at a few but I just wanted to see what your opinion would be for what I should look into next.
