Congratulations Smurftastic and his 2002 WRX, NASIOC's Top Scoob 031
Hey I'm Dave, an Air Force Staff Sergeant, former active duty, now in the reserves. Putting on Tech Sergeant next Spring! So I suppose I'd better start off with a story, and fittingly enough for this competition, mine starts in Iraq in 2009. Like everyone else here who's deployed, I didn't have much to do with the spare time I had -- lift weights, eat, lift more weights, and Skype home depending on the connection. I found myself looking for positive inspiration, which led to looking through online forums simply looking at pictures, thinking about what I'd do when I got home. This Bugeye ultimately became the result of my efforts after coming home. Putting in the wrench time was a great way to slow down from the pace of being deployed, and as you can see, I've been busy. When I picked up this thing about 2.5 years ago, it had been completely stripped by previous owners and had fallen into disrepair. A lot of people in central Virginia know what this car went through to get to where it is. It's been a labor of love (and sometimes frustration) ever since wrenching the hell out of this thing to get towards that inspirational vision in my head I had while deployed. __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ Just recently I finished a long-term project -- a relatively aggressive shave, tuck, and relocate job in the engine bay. I relocated the battery to the trunk to SCCA standards, installed an in-line breaker, distribution block, relocated the fuse box, extended the engine harness, and put in new engine bay sheet metal, then smoothed it out and repainted everything in the garage over the course of many months. The ultimate goal with the engine bay is like my concept for this build - a car should be inspirational. I hope this build inspires the community and look forward to working on this project for a long time to come. Coincidentally, the Top Scoob competition coincides with me finishing a major project I've been working on - an engine bay tuck, shave, and repaint job. I just finished this over the weekend - everything was done in small increments over many months in my garage. Everything is deleted except for ABS, PS, and AC - cuz this is a true daily driver. New sheet metal was put in and the engine bay was repainted!
Enjoy the pictures, hopefully it influences your votes! |

A few more pics of my winter projects... trying to make the interior "moar gooder," hopefully some higher quality pics soon. Essentially it's an S202 theme.

I'm putting this up to show the amount of work that went into this engine bay over the course of the last few years. This is one of those "saving a Bugeye" stories that took an excessive amount of time and effort. All work done by myself in the garage.
Step one: Relocation of battery (bolted through the trunk with distribution box and in-line breaker, 0 gauge wire, enclosed battery box), relocation of fuse box, boost control solenoid, DRLs, windshield wiper fluid, and other random wires. Step two: Extension and rerouting of engine wiring harness (60/40 Rosin Core and a good amount of patience) Step three: Grind out old rusty sheet metal from under battery box. Grind out all brackets built into the engine bay structure on the driver's side. Step four: Cut new sheet metal for sides and bottom of engine bay. Put in new sheet metal, find and/or shave all holes and imperfections. Step five: Sand down everything, remove everything from the engine bay possible, prime, and paint. You've all seen the end result, now here is a comparison: |

I wanted to take a moment to snap a few quick shots of my interior for the Top Scoob competition. The initial thought with this project was to mimic the S202 look, but over time it turned into a general effort to make the interior look as nice as possible. Apologize for the the photo quality, if I only had an DSLR!
A few things to point out... dyed headliner, A/B/C pillars, roof scoop housing, and what I believe is the ONLY Shapeways red roof scoop latch ever to be made. There are a few other snazzy parts I've picked up over time - it's not a finished product, but it's good enough for now |

A big thank you to everyone for all the support throughout the competition and the kind words regarding the build. There some very stiff competition along the way against some VERY impressive builds.
Pretty humbled by the whole thing, and looking forward to using this inspirational experience to continue to enhance my build. A special thanks to the MAIC crew and my friends in the Bugeye community who supported me along the way. |
