Anyone ever test for electrolysis? (grounding mod)
Just wondering if anyone has done this?
A couple volts tested between the coolant and the negative terminal would actually prove that our cars need the grounding mod. Anyone? |

Do a search you will find it.

This is NOT the purpose of the 'grounding mod'...it has nothing to do with electrolysis...it has to do with equalizing the electrical potential between chassis and engine components and reducing electrical 'noise'.

Problem is, it's hard to measure the potential between a liquid and a metal contacting the liquid without using specialized equipment.
The metal in the tip of your voltmeter probe will create an electrochemical reaction with with the coolant and form what is known as a half cell. The coolant, in turn, will react with the metal in the wall of the radiator to form another half cell. If you connect these two half cells through the voltmeter you will create a single-cell battery. The meter will read the voltage of this "battery" you have just made, but without more knowledge of the two electrodes and the intervening electrolyte, the reading will be just about meaningless. There are ways of getting meaningful results using reference electrodes such as those found in pH meters, and there is a HUGE amount of information on the subject of electrolytic corrosion as Nivek-Ca has pointed out, but Uncle Scotty is correct that the presence or absence of a grounding mod would not affect electrolysis in a properly wired vehicle. Sorry for running on, electrochemical instrumentation is part of what I do... |

The second 'advantage' listed is 'prevents electrolysis'. |

"Ehhhum.... properly wired vehicle."
Ok... well I think you all missed my point. Electrolysis in automobiles often results from poor grounds in electrical automotive parts, i.e. sensors, starter motors, etc. If the Subaru suffers from such a condition (poor grounds), electrolysis would be a likely symptom. Would the "electrochemical reaction" from a voltmeter show amount to even a volt on the voltmeter? The problem of electrolysis would show from several volts between the coolant and a good ground. I would like to see some "evidence" rather than butt dyno results from adding additional grounds. Since I love messing with my car, I want to do it... but would like a reason to waste a few hours on my car making a kit. Last edited by JonnySubaru; 02-17-2004 at 12:11 PM. |

The grounding mod isn't necessarily an HP mod, but a driveability mod
