Default did something fall off - what hole for?!

what is this hole above the electrical connector on my strut tower for? I noticed it this morning and it looks recently disturbed around it. Coincidentally? I keep getting a knocking sound from this corner when I go over bumps. Did something fall off?

That is where the lower part of the rod to hold your hood goes. It let's you push and hold the hood at a higher angle so that you can pull engine.

You take the rod out of its pivot point from the passenger side (wd40 sprayed on the rubber helps you wiggle the rod out) above the headlight and place it that hole. The technique is to reverse the rod, so that the upper hook is facing forward; place it in the hood (normal location--slot on the inside of the hood) and then take the lower end put it in that hole.

As for the knocking sound--it could be several things:
--the top nut to the shock/strut underneath the center rubber cover (in your photo) may not be torqued to specs
--worn front sway bar bushings (OEM are rubber and they may have deteriorated)
--front swaybar mounts worn (OEM are two ball joints that are connected together by a bar to connect swaybar to lower control arm. If the ball joints are worn, you can get a clunk)
--depending upon what shocks you have, they may be clunking due to age/fair wear and tear (FWT).
