That's good news. I've always loved the Esprit. They've had great success with the Elise/Exige so I'm sure that's helped paved the way for it's return.

toyota engines = reliability. Which is the only reason I ever even considered buying an Elise a few years back.

It's funny that after a few weeks, we have to boil down Toyota's reliability to their engines only . I hope they stop running their 'most dependable cars on the road' commercials now.
But your statement is 100% true. Why not source a reliable motor and spend all your R&D money making the rest of the car crazy good? |

Does anyone know off the top of their head why the Evora is so porky? At 3000 lbs, I hope it's not the shared chassis.

It's quiet a bit smaller than the impreza and is RWD though. I doubt you could fit a 3rd person back there either. At 3000lbs it seems a bit heavy for a modern Lotus. Was wondering why it wouldn't be closer to 2700lbs. Is it the creature comforts? Must be that, because the cup edition is ~2600lbs. Not bashing it, it's still a dream car(for me). Just them saying they would use the frame from it for their Esprit replacement. Was trying to figure out what brought the weight up. |

The only thing that makes me question them using the 2GR-FE (base) as well as the 2UR from the IS-F and the LFA engine is the fact that the 2GR-FE is designed as a transverse mount engine while the other two are longitudinally mounted. The Evora and Elise/Exige have transverse mounted Toyota plants. I suppose the base engine could always be the 2GR-FSE. That engine is designed as longitudinally mounted. |

Evora is at least 100lbs lighter than the caymanS (Rumor mill is that Caymans weigh in a bit more than their factory specs). The fancy aluminum chasis is where the weight differential comes from, but the porsche is engineered for low weight as well. Considering it is basically lotus equivelant of a caymans the weight isnt too bad. I was hoping it would be closer to 2900ish though as well. The back seats are tiny even by 2+2 standards, but it is cool to have a mid egined 4 place car.

Interesting news.... Although I could have sworn reading somewhere that the Lexus V10 would be exclusive to the LFA. I'm not sure if it would be all that smart to farm out the LFA motor given what they are charging for the car. Might dilute the cachet of the car a bit.
Now, it would make a bit more sense to me if Lotus inherited the current V10 M5's motor, given that BMW aren't using it for anything once the M5 goes to the V8 aggregate. |

For most of Lotus' company life they have used outsourced engines. They have done much better as chassis developers than engine makers.

Why reinvent the engine when you do not have to. Other than to say, its our design, there is no reason to do it. If you can take advantage of somebody else's research, why not.
When I build my home built car from scratch, I am going to use an S2000 engine. |

Ok, so figure it'll be 3,000 lbs. - that means they're aiming for 412-487bhp if the calculation is 275-325 per ton.
