Default renting a sports car & driving the Nurburgring

The cliff notes version is I'm in Germany for my sister's wedding at the end of August and plan on driving the 'Ring. I've narrowed my choices down between a Mclaren MP4-12C, Porsche GT3 or a 2012 Nissan GTR. Money isn't really the object, so which one would you chose and why?

I'm more interested in where you'll be renting any of these cars that allow you to drive them on the Nurburgring, and what the cost will be.

Any one of those is a massive amount of car, far too much for anyone who isn't an experienced track driver, especially for the first time at the Nurburgring. But hey, why not!

McLaren.. You can drive a GTR anytime at home. GT3 may be harder to find but you see them sometimes at track days and if you pay enough someone may let you drive it. I've never seen a McLaren at the track or on the street. Easy choice for me.

I agree with above poster. I hope you have track experience or make sure you get full coverage plus umbrella if avail.

Good luck.

Have you researched places to rent or are you making the list on your own?

This place has all the cars you are looking for http://www.rsrnurburg.com/car-rental...ce-car-rentals

Expensive, thousands of dollars expensive. [Even more so if you damage the car]

Money no object, I would go for the McLaren for similar reasons as stated above. GTR is great, but common. GT3 is great, but still common enough.

McLaren, for the reasons mentioned above... although we used RSR when I went, and they have tons of great choices (that aren't insanely expensive.)

I'd rent a RWD 3 series or a GTi. It's way more fun totally flogging a car to within an inch of its life to get your lap time down than driving a bazillion dollar car with the thought "if I wreck this, I have to sell my house" in the back of my mind.

If I were to drive an MP4, I'd rather take it on the Autobahn. GTR......meh......I'd rather drive my new Wrangler 4 door.....it's probably lighter than the GTR. The Porsche would be the car to buy and drive it as much as I'd like. But don't underestimate trailing throttle oversteer, even in a new Porsche.

I went and looked at pricing. I think I'd go with an Exige. Way cheaper than the ones you mentioned and I think it would be way more fun everywhere except the straights.

The non-race GT3 looks like a good price. Or a 3 series.

Sounds like this is not the case. There are plenty of people who could write the Maclaren off and laugh about it.

I agree it wouldn't be much fun if you couldn't afford to wreck it. But if you could - supercar all the way. Nobody picks the GTI when they play gran turismo.

GT3, since it has best stability control systems, which makes it the car on your list that you're least likely to wreck

Can i give you a tip, definitely don't take any of those for your first time.. Seen too many inexperienced people wreck these types of cars on the ring. I'd take either a fwd or awd car for the first time on the ring, something easy to handle. A buddy of mine wrecked hard first time on the ring, thought it would be a great idea to rent an e46 m3. The 2 meters of Armco that had to be replaced cost him 6000 euros, plus the huge deductible for the rental m3! I also had a few close calls with my SLK, still haven't trusted myself with the STI.

If you have the racing experience to push one of those cars in that setting, why whould you be asking us what to do?

Rent a MIATA!!! although if I have to choose from your list, the McLaren would be a distant second to the Miata.

I rented a 318i series from: (exact car no longer available)

http://www.rent-racecar.de/index-gb.htm

It was fast enough to be enjoyable, w/o me getting in over my head. Theo was awesome and the car was set up perfectly for the track, complete with cage, and helmet.

Thinking about my earlier "take the GT3" answer more: the Ring is NOT a playpen. It is a demanding hairball circuit that bites back really hard after minor screwups. If the OP can afford to wad up a GT3 (or is good enough not to wad it up), then more power to 'im.

Might be a whole lot better to sign up for a Ring school, where you drive a ring-prepped Beemer or sweet Alfa and follow an instructor who sets a fun but sane pace and radios back before the gotchas, "OK slow down now or you might die here."

the idea was to actually take a class and have an instructor sit beside me for the previous reasons mentioned (not doing something stupid on my own)

Mclaren. The F1 GTR is my absolute dream car, and, like others have mentioned, the chances of seeing one stateside, much less driving one, is miniscule.

Chron,

Why not do it in a STi? If you are only looking to do a couple hours we could work something out... Your only draw back would be me in the co-driver seat to keep you down to earth. 06Spec-C Sled.

If you want to go solo, I suggest you rent a Suzuki Swift. Do not waste your money on a supercar... as this can only end bad. Buddy rented on for the day >1k ...track closed the whole morning, rained in the evening... got in zero laps.

It's a once in a lifetime deal I assume - so who cares what your lap time is.

I'd choose a GTR for it's ease of going fast and forgiveness - but I'd want a race prepped car w/ slicks.

The last thing I'm going to do is fly to Germany and rent a Miata. That's like going to Disney and riding the TeaCups....

I think you helped me plan next years vacation. Enjoy and pray for sunshine!

you guys have no idea what the Nordschleife is....itīs a public toll road
- no slicks allowed
- it is nearly impossible to find a supercar for rent and drive it at the ring without an instructor

and even if you find a supercar, and if the ring isnīt closed, and you drive on it, some guys with old E30 M3 or Renault Megane will drive circles around you

But again, please take a vid and upload it, thanks

Exactly. The place I rented from would only rent out their higher end cars to previous customers.
I was only 24 so was limited to only the suzuki swift. Absolutely LOVED it. Beat the lap time i was shooting for and enjoyed ever second of it. It was a car that i was actually able to take to the limit by my 5th lap. I would say that is a pretty tall order in a supercar for a first time visitor.

Its called the green hell for a reason

Edit: rentracecar.de is the place I used. Awesome people!
