I'd categorize the dash as "leathery". Close enough.

Hey all - first time forumer long time browser. Just traded in my 2013 Premium Hatch and got a 2017 Sport Hatch 5MT, all black! Feels good to be driving stick again. Now just need to teach the wife (or not).

A few quick observations -

1. The additional passenger volume is noticeable vs the older edition.
2. Quieter cabin.
3. Apple CarPlay is a huge step up! My wife has a fully loaded 2017 Forester Limited and she's jealous about this.

Anyone mount your phone? If so where and with what so the cord is out of the way? The vertical vents are throwing me off.

Welcome! Glad to have you posting!

I just put my phone in one of the cupholders or in the cubby behind the shifter. The cord is pushed gently between the passenger seat and center console.

I store my phone in the center armrest. I have it plug in for use of android auto and charging.

I use the iOttie magnetic attachment on the vent to the left of the screen.

Thanks - I'll have to take a look at this one. it seems silly with the Car Play but I've kinda gotten used to it.

A slightly damp microfiber cloth. I just cleaned mine and it came out great. The microfibers pick up the dust/pollen and it doesn't have to be soaked. Just a little damp.

I use Waze which isn't a CarPlay app. It's the perfect spot to see the map and directions.

Subaru just released an update that allows Android Auto to use Waze, but I'm not sure if the software update is applied via Wi-Fi in the car or some other way?

It was available Friday after an AA/Waze update on my phone Thursday/Friday. (I posted Waze being available in the "Infotainment" thread last week).

It being available on the HU in the car has zero to do with Subaru and everything to do with AA/Your phone. The AA interface in a Subaru 100% depends on the software on the phone. (It's essentially a dumb terminal interface that just recreates what's on the phone, and just uses the hardware installed on the car as the interface. )

Launch AA in your car, press the down arrow on the map, select 'Waze' (if you have it installed). Much like the same process as which you'd select your current audio player (Pandora/Google Music/Audible, etc...)

Couple things so far...

1) No speed limit display. I bet it will come soon. I love that function in the app on the phone, especially for unknown roads.

2) No "Thumbs Up/Down" for alerts. Most just an audible warning. (I did have a visual warning for a hazard once this weekend, but haven't yet seen it again, and it didn't have the Thumbs).

I'm sure lots of this will be made available sometime since they just took it out of beta and finally allowed it on AA and are probably working through initial bugs from a wider release.

Oh! That makes too much sense. Thanks KC. I feel dumb, but that's okay. Lol I'll go try it out soon. I do have Waze, but I never used it much. Pretty much only when Google Maps wasn't working back east.

That's one of the main benefits of AA/CarPlay. Iterative updates and new features independent of the car manufacturers. Much like back in the day iOS updates independent from the cell providers.

I tried Waze today on AA. I like it more than Google Maps. It just looks cooler. Less technical.

Anyone know whether the reverse bulbs are 7440 or 7443 on the hatchback? I'm looking to pick up some replacement bulbs for a family members new Impreza and my google-fu is failing me.

Has anyone started having rev hang issues with an MT?

Two weeks ago I got a letter asking for my car for emissions testing and free repairs if anything was found. It was like a premonition, because this week my rev hang started randomly disengaging. Clutch-in, instant 1k rpm. It usually takes me through a series of upshifts, then goes away and randomly comes back. Anytime it comes back it sticks around for the whole series of upshifts, then might go away if I downshift again. I'm going to try and take it in next week, it's been 5 months since I bought it so it needs a maintenance visit anyway. I'll get them to take a note.

Wait... why do they need replacing? If they are out, you bring it to the dealer to have them fixed/replaced under warranty... and more importantly to document that a less than 1 year old NEW PLATFORM car had a bulb blow already. They are going to want to know this. Sure, we may think it minor and easy to fix, but seriously, enough reports, it could lead to an electrical problem.

They recently had their windows tinted and asked me if there were brighter reverse bulbs available to compensate, so I was looking at higher lumen rated LEDs. The stock bulbs are still working as intended.

The lights are a pain to get to, unlike my six previous Subies. Otherwise I would've already swapped the turn signals front and rear.

I don't see how it would be hard for the rear and reverse lights. There are four removeable plastic panels for each light.

I'll have to check it out again because it seemed more arduous than previous models. Still a lot easier than accessing the front turn signals.

I just looked myself. There is a plastic panel for both of the reverse lights on the hatch. Use a flat head screw driver. Use a cloth to wrap around the tip to prevent marring the plastic panel of the hatch door. You will see a small slot on the side closest to the edge of the door. Just work the flat head to release the 3 clip taps and tilt down like a hinge to release the three feet on the other side.
Once the panel is off you will the backside of the light. Just twist counter clock wise. The light will click and release and pull it out for the housing. Then put it back in and align the taps and turn clock wise and it will click closed. Thats it.

Oh! Why was I thinking it was something else? I thought I recalled glancing at it when I first got it and thinking it wasn't too hard, but then recently I glanced again and it seemed more complicated... Probably related to stress.

Thanks for checking and photos! It's finally sunny, so I should go mess with them right now!
