Default MT center diff sealed?

I think the center diff on my manual transmission Impreza failed. I haven't changed the transmission fluid in a long time, 140k miles I think. Should I try changing the transmission fluid first, or just go ahead with (paying someone else to) swapping the center diff? My understanding is that it's a sealed viscous unit so whatever is floating around in the transmission case can't be what caused the diff to fail.

Correct, it's sealed and old trans fluid doesn't affect it.

Any updates on this post? I have a sneaking suspicion that my center diff is failing on my 09 Impreza 2.5i with the manual transmission.
What led you to the transmission being the issue?
