The owner is already well down the path of modifying his S209.

doesnt matter how good it is, guys love putting inferior aftermarket intakes on so they can hear more noise and make the car run worse with less power.

Or they’re stuck with 91 piss gas and this superior intake doing absolutely nothing for them.

Nothing. All for nothing. Just buy the base STI.

People are buying these and modifying them already. ughhhhhh........I guess if you're dumb enough to spend $65K on an STI you're not too smart to leave it stock.

I love the fact that Subaru brought S209 to the states. It's the first Subaru that really got my attention since I sold my 2006 STI back in 2011.

In this thread ppl compared the S208 pricing to S209 but the price they quoted are not really the right one. To get a S208 close to S209, you will need NBR challenge package with carbon rear wing, which will make S208 pricing close to 61k USD. S209 does come with a wide body as well, so I really do think Subaru tried really hard to price this car right with such low production volume.

All in all, the price is high, and not everyone is going to like the price or the wide body or the carbon wings. But I really do think it's a really nice gesture from Subaru to bring this rare car in just for the US market. Not to mention you see less and less car manufacture building special edition cars that are actually special and not just paint/badge and call it special.

With the markups they had, I'd argue no - you can be #1 selling widgets, but if you get something special and shaft your customers - I'm not on board.

Just curious.. what do you consider "special" about the S209 compared to the standard STI & Type RA? Besides exclusivity and the standard special edition stuff that other companies provide?

I think the wide body was a great concept. However, their execution was lacking. The fender flares look too cheap & bolted on IMO (the back is literally bolted on). They could have done a better job molding them into the existing panels like the 22B.

You're correct about the S208 comparison, the NBR package was ~$58k if you opted for the CF bits. The base S208 was ~$51k.

Every S208 also got all of these extras that the S209 didn't:
  • Hand-built & balanced engine with forged pistons
  • Twin scroll ELH
  • Twin scroll, ball bearing turbo with titanium turbine wheel
  • Better torque curve & 8k rpm redline
  • Real Recaro Sportster CS seats
  • Bilstein DampMatic II adjustable suspension
  • 11:1 steering rack

They definitely under-priced the "S209 Enhancer" package.

We don't really know how much that Palm Springs S209 sold for.
Hopefully, whoever purchased it beat the sales guys down from $30K ADM to $25K. A true bargain .

The NBR package with carbon lip spoiler is ~58k, with full carbon wing is ~61k.

Yes those seats in S208 are one of those things that I wished S209 would come with, but for whatever reason US market never get those racing seats. I remember the EVO X final edition, the USDM ones comes with ****ty seats, but Canadian ones comes with those super nice Recaro's.

As far as engine differences S208 has a EJ20, S209 has EJ25. I don't know all the details of emission standards that it has to meet and the engineering differences between the two engines, so I wouldn't lump all those engine changes and compare them. I had read long ago EJ20 never made it out of japan/HK due to other countries regulations (again, no way for me to verify this).

Other than that, S209 has higher horsepower with a HKS turbo + all the STI suspension parts, it's pretty darn unique.

I like the wide-body myself. It's wide but not absurd looking. I can't tell for sure from the online photos if the rear is bolted on or not, the rear quarter panel looks not to be though, but the piece on the bumper/door seems to be?

And yes, the rarity of it is nice, if anything it's the rarest S-series there is. All the previous S versions have higher production number than this. But it's for the die-hard subaru fans who is willing to pay the premium.

I do hope this opens the doors for American market to get more STI/S cars. Forester STI would be a nice addition.

Those fender flares are an abomination and not needed for the paltry gain in wheel width and tire spec. Look at them. Just ****ing awful.

Also, if anyone is interested in a blue S209, I can point you to one. It has a $10k markup. I require a $5k finders fee.

Yep - pretty ghetto looking. The rear flare <> vent union is horrid too. When cheesy collides.

The "flares" remind me of an old Legacy/Outback fender trim. Forgot what those were called...

Even the canards look half-arsed.

On another note, a month or so ago, there was a WRB RA parked and that's probably the best looking stock STI I've ever laid eyes on. Good lookin rig. Just drop an STI-tuned FA24DIT in that thing n call it a day.

One of my local Subaru dealers is asking $78k for their S209.

This is a dealership that ended up selling their Type RA for under MSRP.

I'm really tired of this current gen STI. I was tired when they first showed it off.

I still turn my head when I see any previous gen. I just wanna enjoy looking at a new STI again.
