Its an experience thing. You may drive safely, but lets face it, you arent doing a 400whp setup to drive slowly (none of us would be) And even do, its very easy for a car with that much power to "get away from you" and if you dont have a certain amount of experience, Im not talking talent, I mean experience actually doing it, it greatly increases the chances that you wont be able to catch it. My advice for ANY younger driver, ESPECIALLY those interested in going fast, even if its just a typical teenager driving fast thing (I was most definately guilty of asshat driving when I was a teenager. Heck I still am at times, lets keep it real here), then you should do this. Autocross. Do it, its cheap. You will learn more about car control in 4-5 events than you will by just driving for 2-3 years. Do it a full season or two and your driving skills will be at a level that most people will never attain in their entire life. (provided that you SERIOUSLY do it, as in use the instructors, take their advice and such) Driving schools. I dont mean the normal "learn to drive" type. They teach you nothing you dont already know. I mean high performance driving schools. I have seen several and the biggest thing that younger drivers are suprised about is how easy, even in a high end AWD vehicle, it is to go past the limits of the car and lose control. Once you get to the limit, there is a VERY small window in which you can save it. And in 99% of cases, people, even experienced normal drivers will do exactly the wrong thing. Many times the correct thing to do is the opposite of what you would think. Like FLOORING IT. Track days First off, lets face it, ripping around a REAL track is just about the most fun thing you will ever do in your life. I will take it over sex any day. (although that depends with who. I am not turning down Jessica Alba to drive around a track) Also, you will, again, learn a TON about your car. But do all these things in YOUR car if at all possible. It teaches you skills you can apply to pretty much any car, but it will most directly apply to your car. I remember what it was like to be a 16-20 year old guy. The number one thing in my life was scoring with the ladies. Nice wheels, nice sound system, a COMFY car that is clean and in great shape will get you a LOT farther than a hard riding, noisey "race car". Spend it on a nice stereo. MB Quarts and Zapco amps with an alpine head unit is an amazing thing to behold. Is she on the fence about getting naked? Her favorite song at just the right volume level, with INSANELY high quality sound is a panty peeler.

Amen to that. I've had a 370 WHP VR6 GTi, and have driven quite a few High HP Supras(690ish whp on pump) My goals are no more than 300 to 350 whp in the wagon when the time comes for me to put that much money into the car. Great write up.

Let me make this clear...i wasnt bashing you at all...It is completely true that MOST teen drivers are just retarded when they drive...I try and i am one of the exceptions. I dont drive a real fast car(2003 Subaru Forester 2.5x). Its fast enough for me right now...I have done autocross and stuff(not in the forester...yet) but anyways the mentality on this forum and most forums are that ALL teens are bad drivers and that they all cause all the accidents and no teenager can handle the power and responsibility of anything more than a honda. Some of us here(as i'm sure i'm not the only one in here) would rather a nice car and can handle the power and actually dont race around on the streets. But i KNOW for damn sure that if i had 400hp and a ton of torque right now, it wouldnt be good...i'd have fun than it would go down hill from there. What your saying is true...and i agree with basically all of it. I just get annoyed when i see everyone bashing on younger drivers like we are the only ones who mess up. (and to the previous post about starting cars...i think every teenager needs to start with a 1989 toyota camry. if it had 140hp at the crank, than your using a god awful amount of nitrous...lol. Plus if you forget your keys you can start them with a screwdriver(doesnt even have to be a flat head...lol))) |

Oh yeah you are 100% right. People hear teenager and fast car and its autobash.
You know what they need to do with teenagers? No I take that back. They need to do it with EVERYONE of any age? Before you get your lisc. In front of the test guy, CHANGE A TIRE. Show where the oil goes and how to check it. Show how to check tire pressure, and for the love of god, car manufacturers should have included tire pressure gauges from day 1. Now that they have TPMS its not as important though. |

who cares is someone can change a tire or check oil? It isnt a car maintiance license. Its a drivers license. We have insurance and AAA to change tires and if you dont check your oil its your own risk. Neither of these have anything to do with the safe operation of a car.
I agree with the tire pressure thing though. |

I think this post needs to be added to the Terms and Conditions before you can register on NASIOC.

Because not everyone has AAA and you cant always get ahold of AAA. Its basic stuff. You should have to do it. Lets face it, someone that isnt smart enough to be able to show they know how ONCE, do you want to drive on the same road as them |

Guess not (or if you did you broke down right outside a AAA office with a AAA affiliated tow co. and garage next door that was slow) Wait 2-3 hours for the tow truck, deal with a moron that hooks up the chains to the control arms instead of the VRP (and proceeds to break **** in the process) get towed, call AAA back and try to locate a rental place......... Just learn how to change a ****ing tire and check your ****ing oil levels damnit! |

Not only that, but the person that does not know how to change a tire is usually not smart enough to pull over at the first sign of trouble and will subsequently damage more parts and break down in a lane thus causing traffic jams.......

bump...
Excellent thread . My previous car was a Scion TC, then I got the WRX it was a little faster than the TC but not impressive. After 2 months I went stage II and I was happy for a while, then I installed a VF39 like 1.5 months ago and I like it but now I want to go bigger. I think I have a problem , 8 months of ownership here. |

Unless its too cold or raining hard, I'll change a flat. Oh wait, I took out my spare. I'll use my fix a flat instead. If the tires shredded, I'll get it flatbedded back home. This is a country that lets millions of illegal aliens drive on the road who never drove anything bigger than a donkey. |

I guess I'm a little late on this post. Couple months ago I went into the shop to get springs and sways on my 2006 WRX TR. Well, with the adjustable rear mount on the sway, the stock exhaust was rattling. So next thing I know I am Cobb Stage 2 and loving every minute of it. A month later I am a protuned stage 2 with 308ft-lbs of awtq and 232 awHP. My prior car is was a 99 honda civic si (non-modified) with zippo for torque. Stage 1 was fun, Stage 2 a little more intimidating and protuned stage 2 is downright scary. If I had 400 awhp, I would continuously soil myself and the seat cleaning bills would be prohibitive. Ultimately I'm looking at a goal of 300awhp, but I'm going to enjoy my current set up for a good long while. Additionally, you can't discount the cost of new gear sets in such high torque setups applied to the WRX.
Good post though, thanks. |
