My wife just sent me a message to change our location for her group birthday trip with all our friends next March based on all this. Apparently she saw a story that said that data from iwaspoisoned.com indicated 70 travelers have reported illness in DR since March. No idea if that is more than usual, but yeah, 4 deaths that all seem tied to mini-bar drinks is concerning. She won't go to Mexico (Cancun area) because "it's dangerous, even the resorts", and now DR is out because of all this. Wants to go to Jamaica instead now, which has the same state department warnings as Cancun. So I guess we are going to Jamaica... happy wife, happy life.

Just go to Florida. She doesn't really want to leave the US, anyways.

God, I hated Jamaica.

I would go back to Grand Cayman. Love that place!

Bollocks.

Exactly. Cancun and Riviera Maya resorts are perfectly safe and would be a fantastic option for this trip and all that are planning to go, but somehow she's convinced it's not a safe place. And we've been there twice before!

I friggin' love Playa Del Carmen. This was a Zen moment last April. Rain just passed. Walked about 40 yards off shore and just floated.

I see the weeds (sargassum) hasnít improved there. Shore / beach looks uninhabitable.

some complaints seem like possible vapors from mixing bleach and ammonia.

but, some others make me wonder about Abrin poisoning - accidental or ????

Have you thought about Aruba? Itís pretty damn awesome, and all the locals are beyond genuinely nice. Itís a pretty fun place to visit.

While it's true that the sargassum was problematic for much of the time I was most recently there, this wasn't one of the bad days, and the photo makes it look much worse than it was.

2 days later, there would have been a mat of the stuff floating from where I was standing to take the picture, all the way to the shore. A sea of brown.

It's a problem all over the Carribean now on east facing shores. It sucks.

I don't know why it's problematic. Sargassum is a healthy part of any vegan diet.

Donít worry, nothing to see here. Carry on!

Victim? Dude was 55 and from photos clearly not in great shape, complaining of heat and fatigue, went back to his room and was found dead on the floor of an apparent heart attack.

I get that all these deaths are alarming and many have happened recently, but the media coverage with no details to substantiate some sort of poisoning or any relation to any of the others is just fueling the panic and hysteria about it. Until there are more details and these health issues/deaths are confirmed to be related and a cause determined, I am withholding all judgment on anything I read.

Yeah I get that, but to conclude that this guy was a victim of something shady given what's known (and not known) is ridiculous.

And OMG, more people got sick last week, but no deaths

I don't think there's necessarily anything nefarious going on, but something is definitely not right down there...
