Hey guys. Im all the way over here in the UK, however i notiecd this forum and it loked handy! I have a query; I have an 1800cc subaru XT 4WD Turbo (e reg). Now heres the question; Is the bottom end for a subaru XT 4wd Turbo the same as an ordinary 1800cc engine as the big ends have gone in my xt turbo?

If you are asking if the engine block is the same in your XT turbo as in a GL / Leone / Loyale, then maybe...

If its from a turbo then they are probably the same

If the donor engine is from a non turbo (or carbed) vehicle than then compression ratio is different.

There is a menu at the bottom to show how recent of stuff you want to see... since this forum moves slow sometimes its falls between times and stuff doesnt show up.

Howdy campers. I'm back. I used to have a Subie Wagon (the kind of pastel Yellow color) that was in the 70's vintage I think. Both the wife and I loved that little bugger.
Well, I needed to find something that got a little better gas mileage than my GMC truck sooooooooo a searching I went. Low and behold I found a 1981 Gl Wagon 4wd M/T behind a guy's shop. I gave him a call and in about two weeks it'll be officially mine. He didn't know much about it . Something about the clutch or transmission was amiss. I got it for a song. Only 140 some thousand miles. I thought "that's just getting broken in for one of these".

She has the white spoker wheels, chrome roof rack, carmine red color, chrome rear air dam. cloth seats, etc.

Has been sitting for awhile so there is so definite clean up to do. Light surface rust is all for that issue.

I'm excited to be driving a M/T again and no less a Subie.
Plans are minor at this point:
1. New tunes. This could be fun as there is little room if memory serves.
2. K& N Air system
3. Stiffer sways
4. Upgrade lighting.
Wish list.
1. Weber Carb
2. Better exhaust
3. Brushguard.
4. Plus size the wheels

Not many Subies up here in North Dakota.

I have a 1980 Subaru 4wd wagon, GL, 1600 engine, 4 speed. Over the years I have had many front axle halfshafts replaced. I usually get a mechanic to do it (I notice that I occasionally have axle carrier bearing problems after I do), but now I am interested in doing it myself. I have a factory repair manual that indicates that you have to use a special tool to extract/replace the axle from the carrier (and I suspect none of the mechanics I have employed in the past have not used this tool, and they probably just use a hammer to drive the axle out, thus the damage to the carrier bearings). I have used Autozone axles (which can be poor quality, even though they may carry a lifetime warrantee. I notice they either click or the rubber boots go bad quickly; nevertheless, because the price is right, I may continue to use these unless anybody has a better idea. Thus, I need to be ready to replace the axles frequently). Does anybody have experience in this? Is it truly damaging to the axle bearing to drive out the axle with a hammer? Is so. what are my alternatives? (I doubt I will be able to get hold of one of those special pullers/drivers). Anybody have suggestions about a good source for axles?

Newbie here - I've already noticed with the Chilton and Haynes manuals that my "new" 1988 Subaru GL station wagon (4-door) has a bunch of oddities and delicate things. I hope to find a manual sort of thing that actually describes everything I need to know...hah!

Current issue - it leaks electricity. I'm a competent electrician & long-term electronics hobbyist/professional, BUT..

I currently have from the local library Haynes Subaru 1600 & 1800, 1980 through 1989, and Chilton Subaru 1970 to 1988, all US and Canadian manuals. Neither one has an electrical diagram for my car. I have four fusible links right off the battery. The Haynes manual has diagrams with two and three links, the Chilton has no diagrams.

First question - how do I tell what engine I have? Second question - can anyone recommend a manual that actually covers this car?

BTW I know it would be more sensible to post these questions in a new thread with a sensible title, but apparently us newbies can't do that until we've posted three irrelevant comments in existing threads. After composing one completely stupid "why am I saying this?" post, I thought I'd try this and hope a moderator moves it to where it belongs.
