Default Fiat planning its new Abarth Coupe

Quote:
Fiat is about to reveal its new Abarth Coupe which is expected to be the most exciting two-seater performance vehicle for 2010. The Abarth Coupe is planned to come in three variations to make a highly competitive statement on the performance car market. Fiat is in high spirits after its 500 Abarth, set to be on sale next month, received a great welcome and, at the same time, with the introduction of its Punto Abarth earlier this month. With many car buyers seeking smaller and more cost-effective vehicles, Fiat is right in introducing such a model.

The Coupe, which is based on the platform of the 500 Abarth, will limit costs to a minimum by utilizing a simple FWD, front-engine configuration and by carrying over most of the components and switch gear directly from the 500 Abarth. The Coupe will come with a lightweight aluminum chassis and lower ride height to maintain its superb handling and compact size suited for the serpentine streets of Europe and small enough to go through town traffic seamlessly.

On the external appearance, the Coupe is fitted with curving headlights and enormous front air-intake vents providing it with a roaring and aggressive look and the vents located on the hood and behind the front wheels signal that there is speed available to fit the vehicle’s good looks. It also comes with a removable top, pretty much like in the Smart Roadster, to provide top-down riding experience minus the cost of a bulky retractable roof. It comes with the white and red Abarth signature color finish.

On the interior, pressure gauges and Abarth Scorpion emblems continue the sporty scheme. The Abarth Coupe is equipped with Fiat’s Torque Transfer Control which imitates the behavior of a front limited slip differential to optimize traction when negotiating curves, even as LED lights flashes to inform the driver the most appropriate time to change gears in order to get maximum performance from the car or increase fuel efficiency.

The engine that will most likely come with the Coupe will either be the 1.4-liter turbocharged unit from the 500 Abarth which can generate 135bhp and 180Nm of torque or an ‘esseesse’ variant with 158 hp and 230 Nm of torque, but can still manage 45mpg at the pumps. With only a little over 1000kg, sprint time from standstill to 60mph will be 8 seconds and 7 seconds, respectively for the aforementioned powerplants.

Since the failure of the Smart Roadster was agreeably its exorbitant pricing, Fiat has decided not to commit the same mistake. The expected price tag for the Coupe when it goes on sale in 2011 (if it is introduced next year) will begin at only £12,000 , with £1,500 cheaper than the cheapest Smart Roadster.

Can I get a pound of whatever it is you are smoking?

This car is front engine, FWD and based on the 500 (albeit the Abarth variant)

The Lotus is mid engine, RWD and utilises a bespoke, monocoque chassis.
