Default STI Turbo sounds 'metallic' and 'rattly' when spooling

I'd really like to hear from owners of the 2015 STI on what their turbo sounds like when it's spooling in the cabin (with all the windows up). I know the 2015 has a "sound funnel" which puts engine noise into the cabin, so maybe I'm just hearing things more clearly.

It sounds like a ball bearing rolling around in a can or something when the turbo is spooling. It's not the most pleasant noise and lots of people who get in the car ask "what is that?" the same way I did when I first heard it. I did already bring it to one dealer who said "It's just the turbo spooling."

Is this normal for the 2015 STI's? Does anyone else hear this sound? Should I get a second opinion?

I have owned a 2008 STI, 2008 EVO X, and 2015 WRX before this car and none of the turbos in those cars sounded like this...

Just got my new STI...no odd sound for me. But, what a kick-ass ride, huh? As close to a track car for the street you can get for the price😎

Should sound like that minus the flutter, if it sounds much different, it's a problem.

If you're talking about my video, all turbos sound roughly the same. Saying they sound significantly different is fanboyism to the max. If you're talking to OP, then yes, based on just the description and no sound file uploads, it does sound like something's wrong.

Fanboyism? Lol wut. The point is you're mainly going to get intake noise from an STi turbo. You can't really hear the compressor. That's all you hear in that video.

I just got my 15 sti and I noticed that the turbo makes a metallic grinding/scrape like sound on positive boost. Is that what your referring to? I've been trying to figure if it's normal because the new sti has that intake forced interior sound or if it's a defective turbo. Let me know if you figure out what it is.

That's exactly the sound. Over at IWSTI '15 STi owners are chiming in saying they hear the same thing. There is a process to remove the canister, but no telling what it does to air flow.

I removed the sound tube and silencer form my 15. All I get is a pleasant whooshing sound from the turbo now. Can hear the factory BOV as well. Removing the sound generator can will not affect the airflow, the maf is still in the factory intake tract. I've logged almost 9k in miles without all of this crap hanging off my intake, and it runs fine.

Just a FYI, that sound tube is a usdm specific item. If the 2015 is the same as the 2013 entirely, u can replace that post maf sensor hose into a non usdm to remove the hole left by the sound tube.

@jam3v i just got a 2016 sti, my turbo makes that same nice...it's pretty unnerving, but someone on another site said they took to the Subaru dealer and said that's the sound of the turbo sucking air in,,,I dunno why the f it would sound like that but I guess it's supposed to normal...what's ur rides sound like now without the sound tube, louder? Quieter? Or just removal of that annoying sound?

Default metallic sound when spooling

I recently just bought a 2016 sti as well and also noticed the same above mentioned sound.. from what im reading it sounds like its pretty normal.. but very annoying.. I just made an appointment to have it checked out at subaru service.. im also reading things on different threads as well as this one that says the sound tube is what causes the sound by channeling it into the cabin.. so has anybody heard anything else recently??

You can safely remove the sound tube and silencer from the intake. I did on my '15 and it sounds great.

I have a 2016 STi Hikari and I just went to the dealer and went for a ride along with one of the techs. Again, he said that the sound was the turbo spooling. But I like to describe it as a set of jingling keys. Sometimes heard at idle, but mostly on the throttle around 3500 rpms. Annoying. Curious if anyone has found a solution. I don't think it's the sound tube. That would be more of a vacuum sound if I'm right.

Sounds like u need a new turbo. It's must have been worn out to much or abused to much. Check the play on the turbo if there is some u need. New one

I know exactly what your talking about. I test drove two different STI's before buying a Wrx and I had that exact question.

I'm pretty sure it is the induction noise being funneled into the cabin. When I asked the dealer that's what they told me the cause was.

Personally I didn't care for the noise, although it is a cool concept. I'm not an expert but I don't think there's anything wrong with your turbo. Again the two I drove had the same sensation you described.

I have the same exact sound when the turbo spools and I can also hear it one down when I release the gas. I have a 2016 STI with 18K miles. I've been doing a lot of research tonight and it sounds like this is normal, I'm going to bring it into the dealer anyway to be sure.
