Random question. If all of you had a choice between buying rims or buying a borla muffler what would you choose? I kinda wanted to keep the stock wheels for my snow tires instead of switching them on and off but I also want the borla muffler for sound/minor performance increase.

You're not going to get a performance increase. A single washer mod sounds at least as good as any cat-back. Get wheels.

You can get a ~$15 muffler delete. Walker 41785.

Get wheels on craigslist for dirt cheap.

Win-win.

at the dealer this morning to hopefully figure out the oil leak. was told by the service advisor that there is a $160 inspection fee which i argued had better be waved if they find it is what i suspect it is, and should be covered under the powertrain warranty.

$tealerships ...

sorry for venting. i am continually reminded why i do my own maintenance work and have my local mechanic do anything else i cannot handle. let's hope they figure this out as they should and get this leak taken care of for me so i don't have to come to the dealer for the remainder of my years of ownership for this car.

If I ever get a timing chain cover leak I'm just going to ignore it and put some cardboard on the garage floor. No ****ing way I'm paying someone to take my engine out to fix a few drips a day.

i certainly agree. but i guess i'm just annoyed that an inspection fee is even mentioned because i'm 99% sure it's the timing chain cover from what i could see using a headlamp and inspecting. if this was out of warranty, i would just live with it.

I'd maybe try to put some high temp gasket maker wherever it's coming from, other than that I'd live with it.

You won't need cardboard, maybe a fire extinguisher. It'll just continue to create smoke as it drips on the hot exhaust.

Been there, done that twice before my repair was done. It doesn't help.

I don't know what to say about some people. When I brought my car in, the service advisor did a walk-around inspection, got the miles from the odometer and then we went inside. I was still under my powertrain warranty so they was no mention of an inspection fee.

Plus, how can there be an inspection fee when you know exactly what the problem is. You can point right to where the oil made a mess.

(apologies for the free-streaming rant here and reality show style posts with regular updates...)

thanks for commiserating. i don't see how any oil leak (except user error of not putting in the drain plug or oil filter on correclty) would fall out of powertrain warranty. and as you suggested, i told him one could see the oil coming from that area so it should be clearly a warranty issue. [i'm at 50k and my PT Warranty runs out in April]

anyway, some good news here: after inspection, they verified the leak (and that's covered under warranty) and said it was going to be a couple of days, so they are getting me a rental car. i hope they track down the exact source of proactively just attack all three locations specified in the TSB. it would, IMHO, the most efficient use of everyone's time.

Yikes, just noticed that your location is SF Bay Area. Who is this terrible dealer? Please don't say Stevens Creek Subaru ...

Carlsen Subaru in Redwood City. only chosen due to proximity to work.

that being said, i had a horrific experience at Stevens Creek Subaru when i was shopping for my Impreza in 2012. i'll spare you the details, but it was awful: the sales staff knew nothing about the car and worse, told me things that weren't true!

needless to say, i didn't buy it from them.

or just Ultra Black as it is better for oil and it is still rated to like 500F which is well over what that area will get too.

i would do this too.

*shudder* agreeing with...

One of Capitol's Tech is really good, and well known. That said, I've never been happy with my experiences there with both their sales rep and service advisor.

Personally, Putnam and Serramonte have been good to me. But I've never really done anything at a dealership, other than recalls or buying oem parts...

AFAIK
Santa Cruz is apparently a hit or a miss..
Maita is decent, but once again hit or a miss, but WAY too far..

boiiii

ultra black is high temp gasket maker... as far as I'm concerned

I'd say anything over like 350-400f is high temp. Just not ultra high temp.

Is English not your first language?

Math seems pretty simple to me

2012 is not equal to or anywhere near 1997

Has anyone had an issue where their cruise control won't set once in a while?

Happens to me sometimes, usually on longer drives, at 60+ it seems like. I'll be going 65-70, flip the switch down to "set" it, and the indicator will show it's set, but the speed just keeps dropping and dropping... I never let it go down all the way to see where it would stop, because by 5mph under the set speed I'm pissed off at it and have started to speed back up already.

That seems like it would be an issue with the ECU quite possibly, being that it shows "set" even though it's clearly not. I can't imagine it's any other issue like a bad switch or something, if it was that, it wouldn't show "set".

My cruise seems to work fine still and I haven't had an issue yet. It is rarely used though.

Interesting info. In my case I already knew exactly the car I wanted and of course it was not on the lot or even anywhere nearby (manual transmission hatchback Imprezas are not nearly as popular as they deserve to be), so I didn't need the salesperson to do much besides order the car for me. They were nice and accomodating enough.

They didn't try to sell useless at-point-of-sale packages too hard, but I felt guilty because I was buying nearly their cheapest car (kind of like how I feel like a guilty cheapskate ordering water at restaurants so usually end up ordering a drink I don't even want), and allowed them to sell me the "fabric/paint protection package", which as near as I can tell, was just a completely superflous detail job on a new car to the tune of $600. Oh well.

Only been to their service department once, for my first 'free' oil change/service, and the disappointing thing was that I thought I'd be able to schedule an appointment with a week's notice but in fact their earliest appointment was 1 month away so I ended up driving 500 miles over the 6,000 mile oil change interval. Oh well again.

I ordered the rear seat back protectors from subarupartsonline and installed them myself last weekend (with the help of a ton of additional industrial strength velcro to allow them to stick well without the super unsightly headrest elastic) but I broke one of the tabs. We'll see how well Stevens Creek Subaru can come through with the one replacement tab I need. Can only order 6 at a time from Subaru and that's $8.00 plus shipping, no thanks.
