I buy Amsoil OE 0W-20 for $6.50/quart, so I pay $32.50 for 5 quarts, plus 1/3 of a quart more from the extra bottle I have laying around from a previous oil change.

For an extra $7.50/oil change, I think I'll stick with Amsoil. Both oils are probably fine, but we've had one Subaru service writer on this thread who claims a relationship between Mobil1 and engine problems. I suspect that her evidence was anecdotal, but for $7.50 I'm not going to take any chances.

here is a walmart oil trick, the sale price in the store can sometimes be higher than on the walmart site. the site currently shows $24.97 if when you go to the store and the price is higher order via walmart site choose site to store and save yourself a few bucks, then head to walmart and pick it up Walmart store #1744-Webster 1902 Empire Blvd Webster, NY 14580 (585) 787-1370 for crush washer and filter I order online from parts catalog of whichever dealerships have them the cheapest online. Thanks. But as I said in my previous post, my current plan is to continue using Amsoil OE, which I pick up from my friendly neighborhood Amsoil distributor.

sgoldste01 yeah my bad,
mobile 1 5w30 shears down to 5w20 in wrx/sti engines. this caused issues for those that used it which is where I believe the orginis of the anectdote comes from. |

^^ She made the statement in 79's long oil consumption thread. She said that her dealership recommends against Mobil1, and will only use it if a customer provides it and specifically requests its use. She says that she's seen engine damage from customers who use Mobil1, but her evidence is circumstantial as there can be many causes for engine damage.
Regardless, she's a service writer at a Subie dealership, and has seen lots of Subie cars come through her dealership's shop. If she sees a pattern, I may wonder about its validity, but I'm not going to risk it to save $7.50/oil change. My car isn't burning any oil right now (at 8k miles), so I'm happy with how my Impreza is running with the Amsoil. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Right? |

yeah - if you like the amsoil stick with it!
rexygirl's evidence leaves a little to be desired in my opinion. it seems like the problems are due to people running low on oil which as far as I can tell is not just a mobil1 problem. the fact that things tend to go wrong with mobil1 could just say something about the typical user of mobil1 in terms of how often they check the oil and how long they tend to go between oil changes. my point being is that correlation does not equal causation. Some subaru dealers even use mobil1 for oil changes as the default (I read that in a thread here). Wouldn't subaru see that this one dealer has an inordinate amount of engine failures or oil burning issues compared to the general population and put out a TSB? |

^^ I agree that Rexy's evidence does not make for an open-and-shut case. But if there's a chance that she's seeing Mobil1 users running out of engine oil because Subaru's boxer engines consume Mobil1 faster than other brands, then that's a chance I'm not willing to make. She admitted herself that Mazdas seem to run just fine on Mobil1, and she thinks the problem is specific to Subaru engines.
There are many variables and questions. Is this true of the older 2.5L engines, or just the 2.0L engines? Normally aspirated engines, or only turbo engines? Is it only true of engines that spec 0W-20 oil, or is it true with other oil weights too? Is it only true of customers who bring their STIs to track day events, or is it also true for soccer moms? Or is Mobil1 just fine in all cases? I don't know that we'll ever get answers to these questions. As I said earlier, I'm guessing that Mobil1 0W-20 is a fine product in our Imprezas. My car seems to be running exceptionally well on the Amsoil OE product, so that's my chosen motor oil. And I have no plans currently to upgrade to Amsoil Signature, and won't consider doing so until several people show me Used Oil Analysis reports that convince me otherwise. In the meantime, it's Amsoil OE on a 5k mile OCI for me. |

so lets say I want to avoid mobil1. amsoil seems a little to rare in my neck of the woods. what would be the next best choice of common options? castrol? valvoline? how about pennzoil platinum?

Just use mobile1 if thats easiest/cheapest, lol i think you are overthinking it. theres no difference. m1 is not walmart brand, it is reputable.

I really liked the Castrol Edge Titanium in my Volvo. That was a 2.5L turbo 5 cylinder that loved to rev and sounded great while doing that so I drove it pretty hard and was getting 12-13k between changes. After my free oil changes on this car I'm going to use it because my previous experience was so good.
I think for the price difference of a gallon and a half of gas I would go for the really good oils over the good ones. When I've used Pennzoil Platinum or Mobil 1 I was a quart low at 2k and then needed a full change at 6k. I also don't think the engine "sounded" as good especially at start up and at higher revs sounded ratty not smooth. |

I use Amsoil Signature series and go 20,000 to 25,000 miles, changing the filter at about 15,000 in my Corolla - analysis has been good for over 200,000 miles. I am looking forward to seeing how it helps the mileage in the Impreza.
For the washer, use about three wraps of yellow teflon tape. |

Just changed oil this past weekend with Mobil 1 0-20W from walmart. No problems here. Mileage is 1200.
Got my filters here: http://www.subarugenuineparts.com/pr...oducts_id=1898 worked great. my take is: mobil 1 has been around for a long time and is highly regarded by people. I care for my car just as much as the next person, but since i'm doing 5k intervals, it shouldn't have any problems since i'm changing it so often vs 7.5k or even 10k others are doing. Just my opinion. |

just curious. i make a lot of short trips with my car (7-8 minute drive to work and back home). should I do my first oil change before 3000 miles? would what I do be considered "extreme" driving conditions?

I will confirm the wisdom of my OCI at my next oil change, when I send in a sample to Blackstone for analysis. I will post my results someplace on this forum (I'll have to figure out the most logical thread for that). |

However, there is one caveat. If you are leasing the car, or plan on trading it in within the first 200,000 miles I would just do the normal scheduled maintenance. It is only us posers who want to really rack the miles up that need to worry about optimal oil changes IMHO. Internal engine wear takes a long time to manifest, longer than most people keep their cars. |
