Question Looking for tips on exhaust manifold removal

Iíd like to remove my exhaust manifold to tap it for my EGT gauge, but Iíve had no luck finding any instructions or pics for the process (lots of info on the up pipe, but Iím not doing that yet). Is it fairly straightforward to drop the manifold? Can someone point me to some pics showing exactly where the recommended locations are for aftermarket EGT probes?

Thanks!
Paul

its basically just an unbolt and drill/tap job. not hard at all. just remove the heatshields then undo the bolts on the section of the manifold you want to tap (there's four, left, middle, right, uppipe).

as for where to tap, you're better off doing a search cause there's disagreements here about which cylinder runs the leanest (#3 or #1 is commonly referred) so you should read up on it and decide which is best for you. i personally tapped cylinder 3...

Easy. Here are the steps in a nutshell. PM me for more info.

1. Get the front of the car up on jack stands.
2 remove the right front wheel
3. From the wheel well, remove the plastic fender part so you can access the stock o2 probe that goes into the manifold
4. Dremel away part of the heatshield so you can bend back the shield to remove the manifold downward (this is clear when you look at it.
5. remove plastic "skidplate" under car.
6. remove heatshields on right, left, and center manifoild parts.
7. unbolt center manifold pipe and remove
8. unbolt right manifold from block and uppipe. (you will need an extension and a wobbler or elbow joint to get at the upper uppipe bolt)
9. the manifold should now be caught between the uppipe and the block. using some rope, tie it around the bottom of the uppipe and PULL it off to the right via the wheel well. THe manifold, now freed, drops out. Watch your fingers.
10. Now drill and tap, and re-assemble.

Thanks guys, sounds alot simplier than the up pipe install. I suppose it's really just one of the steps on the way to getting the up pipe out.

Now to figure out where to tap.

if things go smoothly than the egt install should be much easier than the uppipe. if this is your first time drilling and tapping, make sure you practice enough on a spare pipe cause messing up the drill/tap portion of the install on the headers will be a PITA to fix. make sure you use oil when drilling and dont forget to back out the tap half a turn every full turn or so.

I guess that brings me to another question: I'm using the VDO EGT, which came with a threaded bung. So I should just need to drill a hole in the manifold, then weld the bung on? Or is the manifold so thick that I need to tap it as well? Or forgo the bung altogether?

Thanks,
Paul

You would only need to use the bung if you were putting the probe into thin-wall tubing (like a header/up-pipe/exhaust pipe). The cast iron manifold is plenty thick enough to thread and hold the probe.

I put my probe on the driver's side manifold midway between where the two pipes jopin and the connector pipe flange. I chose the driver's manifold primarily due to not having to deal with the O2 sensor.
