Default TSB work not fully covered

Name: Steve

Make: 2016 WRX CVT

Mileage: 74000km (46000mi)

Time Out Of Use: 2 weeks, can't drive for more than 30 mins at a time

Problem And Likely Cause: CVT fluid seepage, low power coming from a stop, lurching. TSB 16-103-16R should fix this.

Modifications: Radio

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: Work is covered, but CVT fluid not covered under warranty, despite needing to be drained to do the work

Your Story: I've noticed some fluid seepage in the transmission, similar to what's in TSB 16-103-16R. The car starts to lose power after driving for over 30 mins, which I saw on here could point to torque converter issues (lack of fluid from the seepage maybe).

I brought it into my dealer and they agreed that this issue fell under the TSB and that the work would be done under warranty.
6 hours later, on the phone, they mentioned that 'oh yeah, you'll need to pay $350 CDN for the CVT fluid when we reopen it'.

This doesn't seem right to me, as they would obviously have to drain the fluid to do the resealing work, so you think it would be covered.

On the WRX CVT Facebook group, most responses have said this is indeed the dealer trying to rip me off, but the other Canadian also mentioned he had the same issue and had to pay, in another province too.

Any thoughts?

I’m sure Canada does some things different but in the USA if we were performing a tsb and was done as a warranty job everything is covered.

Default Warranty issues

I curious on what i should expect in the coming days. Just sent my 2019 sti to the dealership. At 20k miles it looks like i either spun a bearing or broke a rod. Never raced, daily driven, but i have an aos and an intake. So i suspect it might be a battle to have this covered under warranty.

One of two things here. Simply having an intake on your car should deny you. Subarus tuning from the factory when you throw on an intake makes it run lean. So you either had the intake on and didn’t do your research to realize you need a tune too or you also have a tune and aren’t admitting it. Either way you’re probably screwed. Maybe you’ll get lucky but I doubt it.

No i had an AP on it, cant run intake without it. Talked to the dealership, and they seem pretty understanding. We will see how it plays out. I was honest with the service rep, and i think that went a long way.

So then why are you lying on here? You said you had an AOS and intake. Nothing of a tune. If your tune was on there you have to call in to Subaru to verify your cid and cvn numbers. If it doesn’t match more than likely your going to be denied. If you removed the tune you’re clearly hiding something and either way a a mod report gets filled out.. Like I said originally maybe you get lucky and the dealership doesn’t care. If you came to my dealer you’d probably be denied.

Default Supraru your funny

Why am i lying on here?!? You obviously have something wedged firmly up your butt. I asked some simple questions and got alot of great answers none of which came from you. I didnt lie to the forum nor to the dealership. Im sorry im not obviously as intelligent when it comes to subarus as you are. Its my first 4 banger and first turbo car ever. Now granted im pretty old at 41. But your god complex can go. The dealership is going to warranty the engine. And i made it very clear how thankful i was about it. It will have the stock parts put back on and will keep it that way knowing what i do now about how temperamental the engines are now. Hope you have a great day, and please see your proctologist...

While you were making it sound like you baby the car you conveniently left out you were tuned. Hence my “lying on here” comment. You clearly left it out for a reason because clearly you have an intake and know it needs to be tuned. So why did you leave that part out? I assumed because you wanted to sound like you were innocent in the matter.

Problem And Likely Cause: Clutch disk worn out

Modifications:

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: Clutch is a wear item, pilot bearing not covered under drivetrain warranty

Your Story: At first I suspected an oil leak from the engine or the gearbox to the clutch compartment but the picture showed that the clutch was 100% dry and not contaminated.
Turns out that the clutch disk was worn out. The technical dvisor tells me that the traction control of the Gen6 slips the clutch and it is the reason why he clutch wears faster

I have many manual cars in my life and I never have to change a clutch before 100k miles

anybody ears of that story before?

What? So the traction control operates the clutch pedal when activated...?

Time Out Of Use: None, took dealer 1 week to perform fix

Problem And Likely Cause: Faulty oil hoses to turbo as indicated in TSB 11-195-20

Modifications: Cosmetic only - JDM shift trim, armrest extension, badging color

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes - Powertrain

Reason Given For Denial: TSB and parts (turbo hoses) not covered under powertrain warranty

Your Story: I noticed a small oil leak on my garage floor a few weeks ago. Inspected underneath the car and found oil under the front of the engine, passenger side. Took it to the dealer with the expectation that the repairs would be covered under the Powertrain warranty. Dealer informed me that the repair would cost around $475, and they would have to call Subaru to see if the repair was covered under the powertrain warranty. Claim was denied by Subaru and the dealer charged me $486 for the repair. I am currently contesting the claim - is the turbo not part of the powertrain?

Your Story: I heard a ticking sound coming from my clutch, the ticking sound would stop once I Started using my clutch. The car drove perfectly ok, that ticking sound bothered the crap out of me though. I thought it was a bad throwout bearing so I took it into the dealership. They took it apart and said a couple of my pressure plate forks were bent and put hot spots in my clutch and flywheel. The excess clutch dust got into the thowout bearing which caused it to start making noise. The dearlership replaced the clutch assembly, flywheel and throwout bearing at no cost to me.

Default 2018 Outback, Engine Bucking

Name:

Make: 2018 Outback 3.6l

Mileage: 45k

Time Out Of Use: 1 day

Problem And Likely Cause: car hesitated and bucked on acceleration. No check engine light. Sounded like transmission issue but turned out to be a loose spark coil. The bolt was entirely back out and the coil came off the plug. Dealer repair completed.

Modifications: None

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: For some reason they believed I had work done on the engine

Your Story: The engine was never touched, changed oil and filters, that's all! Total repair cost $250, it does not seem to be worth fighting about warranty. But it was obviously a Factory workmanship issue

Default Idle problem after replacement for fuel pump recall

Name: Nate
Make : 2019 Series Gray WRX
Mileage: 32k
Time out of use: 6 days
Problem: Idle increases to 2500 rpm while clutch is depressed and coming to a stop
Mods: AOS, Catback, Protune
Reason Denied: AOS installed

Story:
I took my car in to have the low pressure fuel pump replaced as I received the recall notice to have it done. I scheduled the appointment and had the fuel pump replaced. When I drove away and came to a stop I noticed the rpms increase a little as I pushed in the clutch and pressed the brake pedal. I drove my car home and each time I was coming to a stop the rpms would increase and then drop back down after 10-15 seconds. I called the dealership and they wanted me to bring my car back the following week. I dropped my car off and informed them they could have it for a week as I didnt need it due to my work schedule. I told them the car was protuned on a dyno and they had no problem with that. They asked that I reflash the ecu and put the stock tune back in, which I did. When the week was finished I went to the dealership and was told they wouldnt try to figure out what was going on because I have an IAG AOS installed, and SOA told me the same thing. The car ran great until the fuel pump was replaced, and no check engine light has ever come on.
So now I am paying out of pocket to have my local tuner trying to figure out why the rpms increase every time I come to a stop. When I stop now the rpms will sometimes increase to 3500 rpms. Always nice to pull up next to a cop at a stoplight and have the rpms shoot up like I am looking to race off the light. To counteract the problem I have been using the clutch to keep the rpms low.
Anyone have an idea what could be the cause?
I have already had ANOTHER aftermarket fuel pump installed and that didnt fix the problem.

Problem: clutch slipping dealership said flywheel, pressure plate and pretty much whole clutch needs replaced.

Mods: cobb accessport (read only no tune)

Submitted for warranty work yes/no: yes

Reason for denial: tech said I modded vehicle

Your story: I have always driven manuel vehicles for my 36 years of driving. I bought this car as an everyday driver not a race car. Bought it brand new 5 miles on it. After 26000 miles clutch is completely slipping. I have never added any parts to my car besides oil filter and cab filter. I have also never tuned my car because of warranty just got accessport for readouts. So how and why would an accessport have access to the clutch for it to be cause of denial?

Buys $700 Cobb ap, claims it’s never been tuned. Stop it.

I bought it to tune after warranty why would I tune the car and not add the required aftermarket parts! That's how you blow the motor, but thanks for the smartass comment!

Yea for after warranty! Who tunes a car and doesn't add required aftermarket parts that's a recipe for engine damage! I'm not an idiot!

Problem is that even if you install AP for just monitoring purposes, it will still flash to the ECU. So that likely triggered their response that you modded it.
Perhaps try your luck with another dealer, with AP completely uninstalled.

Problem And Likely Cause: Rod knock, spun rod bearing

Modifications: Aftermarket stereo head unit

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: Short block replacement covered under extended warranty from bearing class action lawsuit

Your Story: Apologies if this isn't appropriate for this thread being that my warranty work was approved. I wanted to start a new thread for this with photos but I don't have the post count to be able to. Early April my car began exhibiting symptoms of a bad rod bearing. I parked it and sent an oil sample out just to cover bases. When the UOA came back I took it to the dealer and started jumping through all of the warranty hoops, dealership was great, friendly, good communication for the most part, customer service was top notch. Short block replacement was approved and they ordered the parts and completed the repair. They installed a new timing belt & pulleys without asking for authorization, SOA denied that part of the repair and they asked me to cover parts cost. Service was great and I was grateful to have a new short block at near 90k miles so I happily paid for the cost of a timing belt kit. When I picked up the car I went through the list of parts replaced and saw the oil cooler was not replaced, I expected this, so I asked to verify that it had been flushed before reinstallation. I was assured that it had been flushed thoroughly, so I drove it home and parked it until the new oil cooler I ordered came in. When it arrived I replaced it myself and found the oil looking like glitter (14 mile drive home plus about 10 miles for their post repair test drive on the oil), the oil cooler had grease caked on the exterior and some visible particulate on the inside of it, clearly had not been cleaned/flushed in any substantial way, there's oil residue inside the coolant expansion bottle and in the coolant itself, hopefully a tech just drained the coolant into an oil catch can and reused it and its not a bad head gasket install, and I found 2 bolts visibly loose. I replaced the cooler and the oil/filter. Ran it for a mile and changed oil/filter again, ran 10 miles and repeated. Was planning on doing it again at 50 miles but the car went into limp mode and popped DTC P000B Engine Position System Performance - Bank 2.

I didn't investigate further since I feel that's the dealerships responsibility at this point but I'm assuming debris in the oil got into the AVCS hardware and caused this issue. Car is back in the shop and I emailed the service manager with details and photos of what I found, he said they would make this right. Posting because I don't see a feasible option for them to "make it right" as to me that would be replacing everything the contaminated oil touched and I don't see that happening on a botched short block replacement under an extended warranty. Since that's not likely I'm looking for advice on what to push for as a remedy and what I can do when I get the car back to minimize future issues related to this now that the warranty is gone. Sorry for the book, I wanted to be thorough.

Name: Brandon.

Make: Subaru

Mileage: 25,255

Time Out Of Use: >1 week.

Problem And Likely Cause: Motor consumes 1.5 to 1.9 qts of oil every 5k miles.

Modifications: Wheels, tires, led bulbs.

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes.

Reason Given For Denial: "It is normal and within spec for the motor to burn that much oil".

Your Story: Unfortunately, I wish this was a more positive post but I think it's important to pass off my experience with the vehicle.

Bought the vehicle in August of 2021.

Oil was around 1.5 qts low about 900 miles before next scheduled oil change in October.

Oil consumption test #1 initiated in October at 15,880 miles.

Oil consumption test #1 completed, service manager only checked dipstick and said it, "Looked fine". The vehicle only sat for five minutes before he checked.

February 2022, second Oil consumption test conducted @ 20,152, oil light came on at 19,995 miles. PCV valve changed.

March 2022, second oil consumption test completed @ 22,486 miles. Manager stated the car "only burned" p.25 qts of oil within the 1200 miles.

I found the last test results to be suspicious considering it only burned a quarter of a quart of oil, considering the last time my oil light came on was a full 900 miles before my next oil change.

I called SOA today to document the list of performance related issues I've had with the car and I will be awaiting to hear back from them.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a trend with how most 2.0 motors are burning copious amounts of oil, even at very low miles. Hell, I have a forester with 210k miles and it doesn't even burn oil as bad as my 2020 Impreza. I'm not stoked to say the least and SOA told me to get bent. Lemon law attorney did not want to help with the case, so I traded the vehicle in and haven't looked back.

Default 2020 WRX 8K Miles, Possible Spun Bearings

Name: R.B.

Make: 2020 WRX

Mileage: 8K

Time Out Of Use: Permanently

Problem And Likely Cause: possible spun bearing or maybe the piston rod broke

Modifications: None

Submitted For Warranty Work (Yes/No): Yes

Reason Given For Denial: "aggressive driving"

Your Story: In May of 2021, had my new WRX out on a nice clear day up in Michigan on a wide open road. Was going smoothly up through the gears to 110MPH and I did not go over redline or miss a shift. The engine started ticking really bad. and lost most power. Figured I blew the engine. Went around with SOA for about 5 months and they finally denied the claim and said the engine failure was due to "aggressive driving". The ECU said I was going 110MPH and their 3rd party engineering firm took apart the engine and found no manufacturing defect. Although, I doubt they could discern anything because the engine was torn up and had broken chunks of metal everywhere inside. Several pistons came completely apart. It was also very clear they thought I had mod'd it and then un-mod'd it after the engine blew. Which I did not. Car was stock. Bought a salvage vehicle and I'm in the process of moving the engine over. I really like this car and I did need a new hobby. Leaning a lot.
