I tore apart the stock harness and built a new one from scratch ensuring best possible connections throughout. This completely eliminated the symptoms. I can ground/unground the maf housing all day long and it doesn't change the behavior of the car in any perceivable way..

my car has a hunting AFR at idle and stumbling at low load and I just now found I have a broken ground to the shielding for some sensors. I will post an update once I fix my wiring.
