Haha, this thread makes me weep. My wagon has 205/45-16's on stock wheels, and I'm uber excited to be moving up to 225/45-17 Falken RT-615's! If only I knew...

Not to thread jack, but how much of a difference traction-wise does it make to have a tire width upgraded, from say 225 to 255?

Pretty certain - they are tires that the previous owner had on them, and are not performance tires by any means. They are either 215 or 205, no wider for certain.

The 02-05 WRX use 16x6.5 rims weighing 16.5 lbs with a 5x100 bolt pattern and +53 offset. The tires are Bridgestone RE92 All Season Tires 205/55/16

While it looks good Earl, I call BS. 255 is a stretch on 9.5s, just not a huge stretch like 255s on a 10 or 10.5.

That is not correct. We put on some Goodyear F1 A/S 245/40-18 on a 18x9.5 and it sits square. Where a Dunlon 245/40-18 was stretched ALLOT!
Have you ever stacked up one brands tire next to another brands in the same size? Every tire manufacture has different sizes, even though on the side it might say that its the same size tire.

I understand that, but the 265 Direzzas on my 9.5s are at a slight stretch and were compared to a set of same size Neovas before being mounted. They were about the same, Neovas a hair wider. Despite the stigma of "the number on the tire doesn't matter, the tire manufacturers use different scales", a 255 on a 9.5 will always stretch in my book.

my 255 bfg r1's sit square on 9", my 255 r888's bulge on 9" and would easily sit square on a 9.5". i compared my 255 r888's to a 275 r1, and the 888 was wider.

You are aware that slicks seat in the tire wider than standard passenger tires. By saying your set of R1s fit snugly inside the tire and squared it of on a 9 is exactly what I'm saying, but it gets into contact patch, load, weight, wheel, size, yada yada yada. I'm not asking to be proven wrong, I'm stating clearly that in my opinion a 255 on a 9.5 wheel is a stretch, and will remain that way in my mind until the day I die.

I have a set of 17x9 rpf-1's with 255 hoosiers as track rims and tires and they clear my brembos just fine. With more than enough space 1/4" plus.

fitment on that tire to rim is perfect...

how is it that some tires just look perfect with certain rims...

how can you match up the perfect tire with certain offsets ?
