Question How do you refer to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks?

Inspired by a letter to the editor I read in this morning's paper:

Re: "Commotion over billboard a sign of the times," May 30:

I'd like to say kudos to J.C. Ehrlich Inc. for not removing the "offensive" billboard on the Schuylkill Expressway proclaiming itself the 911 of pest control. To people who find this billboard offensive I must ask: When will the crusade against police cars, phone books, and public service announcements begin? All of them, and more, reference the number 911.

I find it highly disrespectful when people refer to Sept. 11, 2001, as "nine-eleven" or "nine-one-one" or "9/11." Nobody refers to the attack on Pearl Harbor as "12/7" or "twelve-seven" or "one-two-seven."

Give the day the solemn respect it deserves. The news media has helped to perpetuate this shorthand that now has people cringing at the site of 911 on billboards. Perhaps those in the media can lead the charge to use a proper term of reference for a new day that will live in infamy.

Ben Russell

To me, "nine-eleven" is a Porsche model. "Nine-one-one" is the number you call in the event of an emergency. (Erlich, which put up the billboard in question, is a pest control company.)

Not so much a political discussion so much as one whether referring to an event in shorthand form diminishes its significance. Thoughts?

One consequence of our modern society and its conveniences is that it allows people plenty of time to get their panties in a bunch over stuff like this.

So what should we call WWII? "The second major world war in which the United States fought alongside Great Britan and others against... etc... etc..."

Good point, beachbum. Before WWII, WWI was usually called "the great war" or "the war to end all wars."

The Pear Harbor attack was at one place. Should September 11 be called the "World Trade Center in New York City, Pentagon in Arlington, and that other plane whose passengers took control over and ditched it into a field in PA instead of who knows where in DC attacks"?

It bugs me when people say "9-11" or "9-1-1" because that not even how anyone refers to dates.

"My birthday is three twelve."

I generally don't refer to it at all. When the rare need arises, I call it September 11th. no need to specify the year...

I sometimes (usually when talking to like banks or CC companies) say my birthday as "nine, twenty-four, seventy-six"

I work at the gov't agency who is studying the fire that led to the towers' collapse (yes... still studying it..) and for expediancy we call it nine-'leven. it's fastest to say. when you study a thing day in and day out for for 2 years, it reaches a point where you no longer solomly remove your cap and have a moment of respectful silence every time it's mentioned, you know? pretty much have to just treat it as another 'incident' though that's hard when you're reading the interviews of people who made it out
