Reprogramming ECU for new Key
As most of you know, the '05 STi has a factory immobilizer which reads a chip in the key. When my car was stolen 2 weeks ago, the thieves destroyed the cylinder lock & it had to be replaced. I now have a new cylinder lock & a new key but the ECU won't recognize it. I'm assuming the dealer can reprogram the ECU for me to recognize the new key.
I (mistakenly) thought the chip reader was inside the new cylinder lock electronics but I've been told it is actually the ECU that reads the code. Since I've already replaced everything, I've had to jury-rig the lock mechanism & reader to start the car. (The chip reader ring is off the cylinder lock. Stick the old key into the ring & put the new key into the cylinder lock & turn the key to start the car. It's a 2 handed process.) How involved is it to reflash the ECU with the new key code & how long will it take? Do you think a dealer will be willing to do it for me tomorrow if I bring it to them? (I'm going away for a few days tomorrow afternoon & need the car.) I was planning on taking it the place I bought the car from -- Liberty Subaru.

it probly requires a Subaru diagnostic scanner...
i work for toyota and the only way to program a Immobiliser key for them is thru the scan tool. older versions used a gas/brke pedal trick, assuming you still had the registered master key, but htats been phased out. i'd call the dealership and see what they say. for toyota its only a 2 minute process, but thats Toyota, not subaru, so who knows. |

ya, subaru has to reprogram the key, the key numbers are stored in the body control modual or ecu...(the legacy uses the body control...) its not hard to do, its just a matter of plugging in the scanner and entering the new key number

Took it to the dealer this morning & they programmed the new key code to the ECU in just a couple of minutes.
Now I just have to take it to a body shop to have the front & rear bumpers fixed & painted. |
