Depends what you plan to do with your car right?
For me since 99% of the time its daily driving, I'd take the RX8. |

just by the looks of the specs... RX-8 doesnt have the torque i want out of a car (Stock-wise).. and it's nearly as heavy as the WRX...

hey if i could get either car at cost - i really dont know which i would get.
WRX IMHO is definitely more practical and user friendly. Much easier to tune piston driven cars vs rotory engines. There r very few guys that knows how to tune or mod a rotory. AWD is just awesome to drive. I went from FWD to AWD and the difference is quite noticable. Oh the traction. I think most ppl on the forum can vouch for that. RX-8 has been tested and stuff. From what i read it seems like the 8 is more of a cruiser vs a pure sports car. when tested against the rx7 it didnt fair too well in handling and power-wise. Understandable, it has no turbo and is significantly heavier. Also the new engine is untested. Who knows what kind of problems u will encounter. What the 8 has going for it is that it is new, RWD and rotory. Leather, HID and lots of nice toys too. U see leather isnt a big thing for me but after u have driven with HIDs u would think why the WRX lights r so dim. Finally - what r u really looking for? I would really have liked a FR car that has a good p/w ratio. However there arent many in Canada at the moment. the MR-S would've been nice but it is a convertible and doesnt exist in Canada. WRX is definitely a walk in the park to drive. The car kinda drives itself in turns. Put something decent tires on and u r on ur way. Cost wise - really if u can get the car at cost, i personally would go with the 6MT rotory car. I love technology and would give up performance to have a rotory (Yeah i fixed it RC - i meant to say RWD not FWD okie) Last edited by NPC; 07-30-2003 at 03:38 AM. |

Personally, i don't really like the rx8, mainly because of its weight and somewhat because of its appearance, but i don't disagree that it is a good car... well, i don't really agree on that either because i haven't done my research! Anyways, keep the comments coming!! |

I haven't seen an RX8 on the road yet, nor have I driven one, so I can't really comment on it.
However, I do know that it takes a while for the aftermarket performance community to provide parts and services for any model line. Performance parts for the Mazda6 is just starting appear, and it will still be a while yet before we see shops provide aftermarket services for the car, like a dyno tune for instance. Same thing happended to the 02 Rex, and the RX8 will be no different. Expect to wait a year or more before any aftermarket performance parts/service appear for the RX8. For the "bling bling" factor, I'd have to give it to the RX8, it will turn more heads than a (stock) rex. For driving experience, again, I haven't sat in, nor driven an RX8, but the the AWD experience of the Rex is hard to beat. So, I'd agree with the other posters - it depends on what factors YOU find important. |

OoOO... thats a tough one. I would choose WRX over the RX8 at msrp, but an RX8 at cost, thats a lot of car for a lot less cash. Although, for me 164 or so torque in a car that heavy wouldnt work where I live (on the side of a mountain). But damn, just owning that car would make you dead sexy
Do some research, check out the car mags and see what they say. my $0.02. Tim |

How much is the RX-8 anyways?
I have seen one on road, it is a weird looking car. RX-7 looks much nicer. Andy |

Hmmm at cost is pretty attractive. If you aren't going to mountainous places like me (SFU student and live in North Van) then you don't really need AWD. A good set of snow tires and driving slow usually is enough. My parent's BMW got snow tire and combine with traction control, it's decent in the snow but some problems on inclines (need to shovel my driveway before going into the garage). Of course the RX-8 is rather unique with a Rotary and those rear hinge doors, plus you'll be one of the first people to drive one (heard deliever takes place around end of August). I think you should get an insurance quote on a RX-8 and plus first year cars usually have some bugs that need to be worked out.

keep in mind the RX8 is RWD...it might be tough to get thru the winter...BUT..since we don't really get a lot of snow here, it should be fine..
i think the 8 looks really good...very stylish and aggressive IMO.. but the wrx has more potential... it's only when you FI the rotory then it starts blowing up because of the heat...otherwise it's a very long lasting engine.. |

Buy the RX-8 at cost and drive it like 8 months out of the whole year. Then use the money u save to buy a beater SUV to get u through winter.. hehe

They are pretty cool cars, my dad is thinking about getting one
there are a lot of changes to the new rotory mostly the side intake and exhaust ports, wich is a good idea. the MAJOR let down is there is no turbo and the torque is quite low. however I used to have a N/A genII RX7 and it was crazy fast I would shift 9000 + rpm and it would love it sooooooo much top end ,just sick but I would take a WRX over a RX8 any day ,AWD + turbo will spank a NA RWD real good |

First saw the rx-8 at the car show and wasn't overly thrilled.
Saw the real thing in the back of the Mazda building in Richmond a few weeks ago( where I sometimes see a really nice white wrx with roll cage) and I've got to say that I was impressed...quite the eye catcher, esp in red!! If power is the problem, just wait for the Mazdaspeed version, I think 250hp and some other nice stuff! If you can get that at cost, why not?! |

in that case...
Ballard eh? well... how about a fuel cell powered RX-8 running methanol or hydrogen... or will we have to wait 10 more years?

HAHAHAHA may as well ask them to build you a disel verison. Power cell isn't going to work for cars. It's too damn slow and heavy at the moment. I see either man made petro (Sunfuel in Germany) or engine running on pure H2 like BMW to be more fesable.

I really like the Mazda6...I'd consider that even though it is FWD (AFAIK), but it looks like a pretty nice car. Practical, nice looking, decent performance.
Between the RX8 and WRX I'd go with the RX8. It is much more unique as you will not see as many around town as WRX's. And rotarys are very tunable. Too bad it isn't turbo's.....yet. I'd wait and see if a turbo version comes out. |

my only gripe is that i wish they would have made the RX-8 a turbo car since well....the RX-7 was one why not the 8?

poor fuel economy (worse than wrx), minimal torque, and the higher insurance rates than what i put up with for my wrx are the only cons i could think of

As a 2nd car at cost, RX8 is a no brainer - revs to the sky, accessories are nice, and I always liked rotary (just don't like to blow it up when I mod). It's less of a race car and with four doors like that, you can actually sit 4 - forget cargo space though. It's still weird looking, for me at least, I think you need way more power in an AWD to be able to feel a difference (like an STi). 250 hp and 160ft-lb isn't too bad ('cause I like rev anyway) but the WRX would better if you drive leisurely more often than spirited driving.
