A modded cvt wrx I would immediately look into additional cooling solutions for that transmission. A transmissions biggest enemy is heat for the most part.

Reading from your post, you only have a intake. So is your car on Cobb AP now? I don't have much going on with my car but I did get a Nameless Axelback. The car is too quiet in stock form so I needed some exhaust sound. It also helps shifting in a way.

The "problem" isn't big enough to warrant a recall. I'm in no way downplaying the issue because it is happening. Subaru put the recall out because negative reviews are the only thing people see. 1.5 million cars. 100 people complain, but, if an owner or customer is researching online, the 100 complaints are the only thing they are going to pay attention to. Causing "worry". Subaru did this to help alleviate that worry. https://www.forbes.com/sites/jensen/.../#acc5d0079dc8 I've asked around and it is acknowledged; but, doesn't look to be a huge deal(yet anyway). Granted, I have to consider I'm not getting the whole story; but, I trust my sources. You can take that as you will. Have fun with your car. Take care of it as well. |

There are already quite a few threads in the FA20DIT section about this or join the FA20DIT CVT owners facebook group, some good info there.
I have been running Stage 1 for over 2 years and love it in my FXT. Not a single issue. Quick summary: - torque converter seems to be the weakest link - monitor your trans temperature if giving it a hard time, can do this on your mobile with Torque app and a Subaru plugin. - temperature sensor is in the gearbox so temperatures in the torque converter will be higher. - they already come with an oem cvt cooler, however there is benefit from upgrading to a better one. - there are people running Stage 2 with no problems, but they do run an upgraded cvt cooler and monitor cvt temps. - watch the peak torque number when tuning, I asked my tuner to take a few psi out just around peak torque. Yes I prefer manual but for family duties its great. Also good if you sit in heavy traffic every day. Dont listen to all the hate, everyone uses their car differently. Not many manual cars available new anymore. Last edited by Harey; 01-28-2018 at 11:46 PM. |

Cobb knows what they are talking about. If you want more power maybe a protune that reduces torque and gives you more top end to reduce stress on CVT might help.

I currently own a 2017 WRX with a CVT and I have been Stage 2+ for roughly 5 months and I absolutely love it! No problems so far. I even recently hit the 20,000km mark and she has no indications of slipping or reduction in power. She is also my daily vehicle, back and forth to work.
Mod lists include: Mishimoto CVT Trans Cooler Perrin CAI Perrin Turbo Inlet Perrin 100% Recirc BOV Grimmspeed TMIC+Charge Pipe Grimmspeed EBCS Mishimoto TGV Deletes EGR Delete Crawford V3 AOS Invidia Catless Downpipe + Intermediate Catless Pipe COBB AP V3 Protune Boost: 18psi Target What everyone seems to not understand is HOW you drive your car. If you tend to be conservative, a modded CVT will undoubtedly last a long time. Be a more aggressive driver with a modded CVT however, it won’t like you as much and one reason because of this is continuous boost throughout acceleration because of no “shift points” in the CVT (unless you count the S# mode). The second point is where the CVT does not like Low RPM-High Boost periods which can cause a fair bit of stress on the chain/belt. You could say that the chain/belt slipping to be considered it’s “weakness” but there are many other CVT Tuned WRX’s in Japan that are tracked and have no problems due to the addition of proper CVT cooling modifications and proper tunes that account for the Low RPM-High Boost areas. I push my car to the limit ***SOMETIMES*** but that’s on rare occasions because I respect where the limitations of the transmission can go to. I treat my car with respect and she treats me by helping me know that it won’t break down. My opinion on modified WRX’s with a CVT: HELL YEAH GO FOR IT! ***BUT*** do remember that there are limitations that affect how much power output you could put out (transmission etc) and secondly, HOW you tend to drive your car. Also, make sure to keep up with the required fluid checks and daily maintenance to make sure your CVT won’t crap out on you. |

i love these threads. a guy gets the correct answer but doesnt like it so he keeps asking until someone tells him what he wants to hear. a cooler or torque converter will not increase the torque capacity of the cvt. the chain flat out cannot handle more torque and remain reliable and there is no way to fix it currently. the only way a cvt will hold up under stage 2 power is if you dont use the stage 2 power. its not a question of will it fail, its when will it fail.
