Default Where do you guys work, what do you do, and what is your environment?

Spawned by the cell phone thread:

I work in the SF bay area at a software (video game) company doing software development (doing design specs now) and have a very lax office environment.

I can wear whatever the hell I want, use my cell phone, and I have an office (upgraded from a cube! w000t!). Pay isn't as great in video games as it was in database software and such, but its more fun even though the commute is terrible.

What do the rest of you do?

I'll bite, because I'm as bored as brucelee is to go on this threadmaking rampage

I work in, on, and around about 20 or so 1940s-vintage manufacturing and aircraft storage hangars converted to cube farms and Radar labs that run down the east side of Phoenix Goodyear Airport.

I make Radars, and make them do neat things.

Environment's kinda good-and-bad. We used to be able to wear jeans / polos until some numbnuts showed up to a customer meeting with a 4-star in a Misfits t-shirt and torn up jeans. We can use cell phones in unclassified areas, where I spend about 40% of my time. I have a cube, but I'm more and more frequently not in it.

Pay kicks ass. Benefits are the best in the world. The 3 mile commute is righteous.

I work for the 2nd largest manufacturer of a certain type of building product. I am a rep for them. All I do is go to contractors and educate them on the product and supply literature. I spend most of my time driving, only a few hours a day is actual work.

Most of the time I just stop in cool spots, learn stuff, take pictures and fish. My territory is ColoRADo, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Eastern Washington, North and South Dakota.

They bought me a car today, its a Subaru but not sure if its a Forester or Legacy Outback. Ill probably actually get it in 2 weeks when I get back home. I live in hotels now, usually only home 5-8 days a month which is pretty cool but I miss friends and family but I meet cool people everywhere.

FTW

That sounds like a pretty sweet deal... however, I don't know if I could do it alone. I'd need a partner in crime.

I work in the warehouse of a lawn and garden center. Its low stress for the most part... untill the part-time help arrives to fubar everything possible.

But for the most part I get to play with one of these all day.

(except for the fact that mine is older and crappier)

well my friends are all scheduling their vacations to go with me, in the summer Im in literally some of the best fishing places in the nation and in the winter, THE best snowboarding places.

Last weekend I was in a town people save for years to fish there, cost me $15, but I was with locals I met. Most people spend $500 a day on a guide there.

Oh and my company pays for my gas, hotel, food and other needs so its pretty much a paid vacation with a little work mixed in.

FTW

Not too bad, Utah sucks a whole lot, its really bad. I can usually find someone to talk to or keep me busy. I can blend in pretty well and look like a local. Today is boring, I am wore out from earlier in the week so Im hanging out in my room but tonight Im going out and having fun down by the lake.

I meet tons of interesting people, from construction workers to a billionaire.

I usually try to match a tshirt Im wearing to what kind of town Im in or who I want to hang out with. Monday I wore a fishing shirt, hung out with people into fishing. Tuesday I wore a punk band shirt and hung out with punks in Boise. Last night I wore a snowboarding one, hung out with snowboarders.

Its like using a lure to meet new people and works really well 90% of the time.

Im a ****ing weirdo, and if I dont meet anyone I dont mind hanging out alone. Gives me time to think of dumb ideas and learn new stuff. Im going to start a blog too.

FTW

Work for one of the largest power companies in the country. I oversee the power grid, anyone that does anything on the electrical system goes through me first. Work rotating shifts. Office environment is laid back, some folks watch TV on their respective LCD's during the day...everyone watches at night. If it's quiet, some "rest" can be had on graves. I make an equal amount of money in overtime that I do in regular time.

Although, if you make a mistake be prepared to be involved in an "investigation" where you stand before a panel of managers to explain yourself...that's after they've done the "fact finding".

I teach 5th and 6th grade in a K-8 school. Besides the principal, PE teacher, myself, and the custodians, every single employee is female...and they're not very fun.

I work for the only truly profitable airline in the US of A. I have a great work environment, I have to wear uniform which are dockers with a polo or button up shirt.

My job consists of sitting on my ass, and telling pilots where to park. Thats it.

Pay sucks, but will get alot better in the next few years, benefits are awesome, and the people I work with are great.

I work for a large (for NZ) Retail company as a project manager.

I open up all the new stores, and handle refits and relocations.

This year has been dull but usually spent 5-6 months a year in a hotel, 3 weeks in each location. Covering the whole country, so get to see some pretty cool spots. Gets a bit tiring being away from home, but i can usually fly the missus out for a night or 2 if the project is going well.

Have 20 young staff (varies project to project), my biggest issue is trying to stop them sleeping with each other on the projects.

Get to use my cellphone or my work one as much as i want, and unrestricted (for now) internet access, flexible hours and work from home if i want. No uniform, jeans and t shirt most days.

I also have an expence account of 100nzd a day (when on a project), over and above the paid for fuel, breakfast and dinner at the hotel. Which can be used on anything at my discretion.

I'm in the Human Resources division of a large health insurance company.

It's a very P.C. environment.
