Remote car starters and the neutral switch on manual tranny.

Has anyone installed a remote car starter themselves on a manual tranny?

Our 5-speeds DO have the neutral switch, but it's not what I was expecting. The switch is CLOSED when the car is in GEAR, not when it's in neutral.

I was going to use the neutral switch as the "P or N" automatic tranny sensor to the remote starter, but don't think it's possible now. Any suggestions?

Here ya go. It's been awhile since I've done this but this should work. You will need 2 relays, insulated male spades, and some wire.

if it shows ground while in gear, why not just hook it to the negative shut off on the remote start??? or use that to turn on a relay, then that to the negative shut off???

Do you have any notes that go with this picture?

I'm guessing that all of these numbers are in connectors, but can you explain which ones are there....

The numbers represent the contacts on the relay. When you look at the bottom of the relay you will see the numbers. The lines represent a wire connecting to the contact along with what the wire is supposed to be connected to.

Also what SuperSube suggested would be a much easier way to hook it up. Take the wire the is the negative shutdown wire (hood pin) and connect it to the neutral safty switch. That way whenever the car is in a gear the remote start will see ground and not start.

Some remote start modules have whats called a neutral safety wire input, such as all DEI(Viper, Sidewinder, Python.. etc.), anyways its a small guage wire(very thin) and is black with white stripe. The car can only be started if the wire is grounded or closed. I have done a similar install on my Nissan Xterra and it works great. Also dont forget to isolate the neutral safety switch with a diode, you dont want anything backfeeding into your car. You can use a relay if you want but it will always be energize when the car is in neutral and can wear down your battery. Where did you find the neutral safety wire anyways(ECM)?

Thanks for the clarity. I did think of the diode idea, and the remote starter that I bought does NOT have a neutral switch wire on it. I'll use the hood switch.

Where did I find it? I'm not sure I understand the question, it's just two wires coming out of the tranny. I have the schematic in the Factory Service manuals, then if you simply look in your engine bay, right under the air filter, there are two little (2 pin) connectors. The brown one is for the neutral switch. I hope I answered your question, if not feel free to e-mail me.

...or you could get a clifford starter. They don't use a neutral sensor. (at least mine doesn't) You just hit a button before you get out so it knows it's in neutral, then you turn the car off with a button and it's ready to go.

That kinda sucks though. this way, you have to remember to set it up first, or you can't use it later. I'm trying to see if I can fool it into thinking I've got an auto so I don't have to do this...
