600 miles is still very young for a car. Give it some break-in time, and I'm guessing you'll see closer to 30 mpg on the highway.

My steady highway mileage is very good. Around town is mixed. The CVT is a little too jumpy around town, plus, it downshifts too early, and thus forces you to put more throttle on to bypass the bog. So it seems to not be tuned optimally.

'13 Impreza Base Sedan, CVT, 20 weeks old, shy of 8k miles.
50mi round trip commute, 5mi to and 5mi from freeway. Street speeds = 35mph, freeway = 50% up to speed (65mph), 50% creep&go (hey it's L.A.). Display shows 32+ mpg avg, 26 mph avg. |

I was surprised when I filled up yesterday and got 28 mpg. On a side note the computer mpg was accurate within .6' it's never been closer than a full 2 mpgs before. I'm starting to think that it's better to let it idle and warm up before driving it cold. Neither is good for mileage but this way is the lesser of the two evils.

R0d is that what you did for this last tank? Warm up first? I may try to warm up for more than 10 seconds this next tank

Yup and it's been freezing ass cold by Virginia standards so my warm up has been every morning for about 5 minutes. It must just suck gas like no tomorrow when the engine is cold is all I can say.

I'm gonna try it your way, I was driving after waiting a minute then keeping it at/under 2k rpm while waiting for the blue light to go off. I did wait for the light during the first 1k miles, but on fresh trip resets, watching the avg mpg go down like clock work made me start doing cold driving. |

Filled again today, 26.5 which happens to be the lowest I've had after weeks of 89e10 and 87e0. And this was after a 2 hour highway trip for work in addition to the normal commute. The last tank was 87e10 and I filled with 87e10 again so we'll see. Maybe I'll try like r0d and warmup for a minute or two instead of 20 seconds. Not sure I can stand 5 minutes |

I haven't done the math on idc etc, dont really know the numbers anyway. But I would not be surprised if it used well under a gallon per hour at cold idle...
The theory works but I just don't want to get out of bed early enough to wait for a warmup haha |

Just remember guys that it isn't only the engine that needs to warm, you have transmission, differentials, wheel bearings as well.h And torque converter for cvt)
When it is cold my car is plugged in plus I let it warm for 5-10 min and even with that it takes about 10min on the highway to see m y mpg indicator climb and stabilize The epa tests this and factors it in, but I don't know at what percentage, I doubt it is a high enough percentage |

Its been a great year weather-wise, here in the sunshine state. I have been managing to get nearly 31 avg combined mpg even though I live 20 miles from disney world (soa says its severe). My mpg's are going up all the time. I do let it warm up for about two minutes every time its sat more than two hours.

My mpg has been pretty bad with these sub-zero temps. But with the $3.00/gal gas my cost per mile is about the same as average.

I usually don't move the car until the blue light is off.
Its harder to keep this habit in the summer because Im sweating my ass off for that 30-60 seconds. In winter Ill turn it on, go back inside, come back out in a couple minutes and ready to go. Mpgs have been dropping off a lot with sub-freezing temp, but still within epa range. |

On top of that question, will the trans fluid warm up while in park? I'm assuming yes, however my ram will not. The trans fluid will not pump while in park on my dodge, it does on the Chevy though. So the ram I put in neutral to warm up trans before driving. Obviously the differentials will not unless moving, other than the slight vibrations from the motor running, but that's so minimal. The cvt fluid I assume pumps in park, but not sure.

Temp -3f. Plugged in, started and idled for 10 min because I was slow. Drove 1 mile from house to interstate, set cruise at 70, mpg indicated 19.0mpg and slowly crept up to 24.5 over the next 15 miles against 15mph headwind. Sucks but not much I can do about it. |

Sitting at just over 28k on my 2012. The cold weather (down in the teens) combined with my 8 mile one-way daily commute has been killing the gas mileage (showing 22-25 mpg on the display, usually 1.5-2 mpg high) this week. Still at an overall lifetime MPG of 26.74, down slightly from 26.98 a year ago.
Still pleased with the mileage, despite the lower winter MPG's. Most of the blame goes to my short commute, the car's dislike for the winter blend gas, and the warmup period for the car. New tires 8500 miles ago do not appear to have had a negative effect on the mileage (swapped the stock Yoko's for a set of Continental Pure Contact DWS's), and are much quieter, while appearing to handle better. Still can get sustained mileage in the 37-40 mpg range if I hit the two lane roads, watch my speed (keep it under 60), and let the cruise control do the work. Unfortunately, this isn't my normal daily driving... |

Interesting on the idle warm vs drive and warm. I have been doing the drive off right away. My thinking is if the engine is being flooded with gas and RPMs are high, I might as well use that energy to go forward than sit still...
Who knows if that thinking is correct. I sort of let the car carry me around since I have a slow exit until main roads. |

That's my thinking as well, I just take it easy until it warms up.

I'm the same way, next to no idling. I just plug it for a few hours if it is cold weather, Canadian cold that is!
