Question my gf's 89 Camry has problems - please help me figure it out

ok so its a very old car, 1989 automatic with 130k miles, but her car has never had problems like this before. so she's coming home yesterday and it simply stalls at a light, starts it up again and drives ok until the next light or stop sign, stalls again. no smoke comin out, no sounds, no shaky tranny or anything. starts up again smooth and drives with no hesitation, and stalls at home. it seems like it should be an obvious problem, but im no mechanic. i was like 'eh its an old car' maybe its the timing belt, idle timing, fuel injection... i dunno! i never owned a car past 100k miles. please help me! i figured you guys would know... thanks.

Idle air control valve/motor. Pull it out and clean it. Also, run a bottle of BG44k through the gas tank.

Erm.

It's not the timing belt... cuz it would not drive anymore.

It may be the idle system... not letting enough air in, or the air/fuel mix is off.

Basically it sounds like there's very little you can do to fix it yourself, since you don't know anything about engines.

You could try some Fuel Injector cleaner, pour it in the gas tank, drive around, see what happens. But it probably has to go in to the shop.

Also... given that he thought it might be the timing belt, I'm prepared to go out on a limb and guess he won't be able to properly locate/remove the Idle controller/throttle body/TPS/anything.

Does she have the car regularly maintained? If not, do the spark plugs, air filter, and fuel filter first so you have a good baseline. Then start diagnosing.

Give the car a big, powerful kick, as that is the best way to fix things.
