Default Sunroof Squeak Fix?

I have a '99 RS that has just recently started squeaking and groaning around the sunroof when I enter the alley behind my house. I also notice it on speed bumps. It appears to be chassis flex. I have a front strut tower bar and have ordered a rear strut tower bar. Suspension is stock other than 18 mm rear bar. Any other fixes? I looked at the sunroof mechanism and all looks tight. I put some silicone around the edges hoping to reduce the rubbing sound, but no appreciable difference. I have about 1.5K left on my warranty so next time I bring my car in to the dealer I will point out this problem---though I am less than optomistic they will (or can) do anything about it. I am going to take it to the dealer before I put the rear strut tower bar on so they can't make any claims that the rear bar is causing the problem.

If anyone knows of a fix for this problem, let me know. I ran a search and found a few posts, but nothing too helpful. Thanks.

You might try some silicone spray lube and put it on everything you can see up there. Works for me.

I have the same problem I took it in for warranty and they replaced the whole sunroof assembly and said a weld was broke or something and now 2000miles later its doing it again, I also have front and rear strut braces, adjustable sway bar and just recently prodrive WR suspension. If you find a fix let me know cause I would really like mine to stop making noise too.

On my last warranty visit the dealer lubed it up with dry lube (to
last longer). It has fixed it for now, so I guess the answer is to
lube the life out of it.

Default Drylube

Subarustu: what "dry lube" did they use or do you know? Graphite powder? Anti-seize? Work with me here.

I will make a dealer appt. in the next week and will report back what they tell me.

ha. Mine does it too. The thought of getting the dealer to take care of it never entered my mind. Hmm. Bah. Whatever. It's a car, let it squeak.

Good question, I didn't ask. It looks like they used some kind of
graphite lube. I say that because it is blackened the grease on
the rails.

Just go to your local auto store like Pep Boys and get Pyroil Multi-Purpose Silicone Lubricant. It's in a black spray can. Use it on all the rubber parts of the sunroof. Also, you can use it on the rubber surrounding your windows if you notice them rolling up slowly. It helps to lubricate them once in a while. Hope that helps.

That dry lube could very well be graphite. Again, I think just using silicone spray should work well too.

Default Silicone spray

As I indicated in my original post, I have used the silicone spray with no appreciable improvement. Thanks for the input though.

I've been meaning to climb up under my dash and hit everything with the Pyrol silicone. My clutch squeaks and it's bugging me.

The sunroof on my 01 RS squeaked from day 1. I've had it in to the dealer 3 maybe 4 times. Subaru recommends that they install some "plastic shims". After the 2nd or 3rd shot they killed the squeak. I was stoked. Then I tried opening the sunroof and it wouldn't open. Back to the dealer. They played around with it some more and got everything working fine with less squeaks. Now I just drive with my foot to the floor and hope the intake noise from my Ganzflow covers up the squeaks.

A word of warning. In order to install the "plastic shims" the dealer will remove your headliner. As you know once someone takes out interior parts, they rarely go back in looking as good as new....

Default removal of headliner

Suba_Roo: that is encouraging to at least hear that the dealer acknowledged that this was a problem and made an effort to fix it. Do you by chance have your invoice from this work with the reference number for the work/parts? If they take out my headliner and don't reinstall it correctly, I will be on them until they get it right.

I had to have them fix head liner and plastic trim because after replacing the sunroof they didn't line all the pieces back up.
