Haha, thanks. I kind of mixed the 5's and 4's up, my bad. Cool, I may need this info if my transfer gears and diff die on me. Might throw a wrx center diff and transfer gears in my 05 RS transmission and get an 02-05 wrx rear diff.

looking for some advice with my set up....
I have a 1995 impreza L AWD manual with a stock 2007 wrx 2.5 swap I'm still running the stop trans and rear diff from the 1.8 NA stock P.O.S. I'm assuming its this: 3.545 / 1.947 / 1.366 / 0.972 / 0.780 / 4.111FD - '93-'95 USDM Impreza L/Brighton AWD well as you can imagine it isn't idea....I'm hoping to simply upgrade my turbo to about that of a 07 STI as well as top mount and a tune to match....as far as mods go that really should be it for me....I am looking for something in the range of DD but I do wish to drag race it maybe 1-2 a year but am thinking about joining local auto x at some point....not breaking stuff is higher priority then good numbers.... I don't have a ton of cash after doing this swap so if I can change out as little as possible that would be great.... I will have to go from cable to hydraulic I'd like to know what parts I need for this...cost and how much of a pain in the ass it is.... my gearing is so F*ed right now that freeway driving (60-70) in 5th gear is about 4,000 rpm or more....I think my car would top out before 100mph which means my milage anywhere is terrible.... |

^^ DUDE, SWITCH OUT THE REAR END TO THE 06-07 3.70 FD BEFORE YOU F* UP ANYTHING.
4k at 60-70mph is HORRIBLE. |

how about some help instead of laughs....everyone tells me about what a great resource this website is but every time I ask a question I just get made fun of....
I've never gotten help or a straight answer from anyone....this its all a big click I'm not in... we can't all know everything and it would be nice if someone would give me some good advice rather then taunting me..... |

I think Fuji was just joking about the other guy recommending a "3.7" final drive, surely he wasn't poking at you. What size wheels are you running? Have you verified your actual speed with gps or radar?

Your gearing isn't all that bad. I actually need to list an AWD 5spd 1.8L gearing on there. Your 5th gear if I am correct should be more so .825 with the 4.111FD. That isn't too bad compared to my JDM 6spd, just a tiny bit shorter. I turn 3400rpms at 80mph. If anything, that isn't as bad as the Outback tranny I put on the '03 WRX, which has a shorter 5th gear. You can see that video demonstration in the first page. Your gearing is pretty nice for the rev range of the '07 WRX swap. Trust me, you won't top out at 100mph. your 4th gear will bring you all the way to 120mph no problem. you're better at look at the RPMs and doing the calculation to figure out your speed. Your car is still cable driven for speedometer. http://www.teammfactory.com/gearcalculator.php Only thing i can recommend for cheap would be getting an older WRX/STi tranny V1/V2 which run the 4.111 still, or find one from Ver3-6 WRX/STi wagon, which runs the 4.111 and same gearing. It'll feel like a 2.5RS tranny. 3.454 / 2.062 / 1.448 / 1.088 / 0.825 / 4.111FD If not that, then you may have to save some $$$ for a newer tranny, or one that's rebuilt with newer gears or aftermarket gears. yes I was poking the other guy. |

I was having some very bad problems with the tranny shuttering real bad at any gear change, my clutch pedal getting stuck to the floor under hard acceleration, and generally having RIDICULOUS pedal feel....
I later found out the the mount for the cable was bent and the fork was getting caught on it and causing the cable to not pull properly.... this is fixed now but I still have some hard shutters from time to time, it drive as though 1st and 2nd are ONE gear, and if just runs me tightly wound on the freeway.... I have been told time and time again if I follow through with my plans for a new turbo, TMIC, and tune I will blow my gear box.... so if I need to go for a v1/v2 wrx/sti tranny do I need to do axles and a rear diff?? will it hold?? will it be worth it?? what should I pay for the parts I need?? |

Your rear diff will hold up OKAY. if it blows, then time to change. Your rear diff is still the old skool ones, so if you change to the newer like say a 00 2.5RS, you need the newer axles any from 98-01 Impreza/Forester/Legacy. |

I'm not sure how the calculation works....so will an 07 sti turbo and intercooler (with tune) blow up my tranny?? what should I expect to pay for "the right" set up??

The turbo is TMIC setup is capable of producing enough torque to break your 1.8L tranny. I broke my 2.5RS tranny just building boost from 2500rpms on my EJ22T motor swap running a TD04L; setup produces a good 240wtq at peak boost 14psi@3200rpms.
I went through 3 5spd trannies; 00 2.5RS, 00 OBS, and 93 Legacy before settling on my '04 JDM DCCD 6spd driveline. This was on my '03 WRX swap with EJ22T shortblock running an EVO3-16G-8cm on pump gas. Power output was 280whp 270wtq, peak boost 21psi tapering to 18-19psi up top. You have to drive a 6spd to see if you like that. Hopefully someone with an STi would let you drive it around to get the feel of the 6spd. the '07 STi 6spd is a nice investment for those who don't want short gearing. The right tranny is what you do. Just pop in some gears in your 1.8L tranny, like reguler STi 5spd or STi RA 5spd gears for being the same 5th gear as yours but geared shorter once you get into 2nd gear. $1800-$6000 from gears being put in to a full 6spd swap. |

a friend of mine has a sti 6spd in his 93 wagon with JDM v8 swap...its nice and everything but theres NO WAY I can afford it....I saw what he paid and what he had to go through and I just simply can't do that...not after what I payed for the car and a new swap...I'm a little more upside down in this car then I should be....I'm looking for an awnser that isn't "top of the line" can I run a wrx trans and not break it and not pay $2000??

If you can find a JDM GF8 WRX Wagon 5spd '96-'00. that would be a nice cheap alternative to be able to retain your 4.111 and also get a tranny that is decently newer as well along with pricing. Start going into GDA trannies and pricing starts getting higher as the trannies are newer. These trannies would be around that $700-$2000 possibly, IMO. A few are trannies the the JDM Legacies, which are the same as a few WRXs as well. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-S...Q5fAccessories Last edited by FuJi K; 10-15-2009 at 03:47 PM. |

where can I find one?? I'm assuming because jdm trannys sold locally are going to be second hand should I order one online?? if so...where from??
I'm not dead set on keeping my 4.111 final drive but if the cost of tranny and diff is worth putting me into a better field of drive train I will think about it....ultimately I need something that can hold my power for at around 2k... |

USDM WRX tranny GDA run 3.900 and later '06+ run 3.700FD. Gear spacing is like your 1.8L but much more speed because of the final drive. USDM WRX tranny GR run a 4.111FD and gearing is the same as the Sti ver3-6. All these trannies still break when you add more power. They'll hold well for 300whp with not much problems. Driving habit will break them though. |

I have a really good driving habit and I understand that ANYTHING can break....if I just go with the [quote]USDM WRX tranny GR run a 4.111FD and gearing is the same as the Sti ver3-6.[\quote] would this be good??
what would you do if you where me?? if you had my set up and couldn't afford a 6spd.... would I be hitting 300whp with turbo, TMIC, and a off the shelf tune?? |

i'd find a JDM WRX/STi version 3-6 tranny, get an Auto rear diff from 96-99 Outback/97-03 Forester; 4.444 and stick that in the rear. Cheaper route.

i'd get the older tranny, get new guts for it, then go with that. im debating on getting a spare tranny, getting 05+ LGT 1-4's thrown just for peace of mind. they are stronger so ill give them a try.

^^ MF's close ratio gears are cheap and an upgrade but they break as well, ive been paying close attention to some of their threads n there is a guy in MD who has had the set replaced for the third time in less than a year n change......
you'd be better off waiting for their pro-gears to be released (supposed 400whp/tq strength capability). not trying to rain on anybody's parade, just my $.02. |
